Hey all,

I'm going on honeymoon to the Maldives in a few months time and can't seem to make up my mind if I should take my dslr or not. Our island is very small so there isn't really much in the way of scenery that I can photograph.

I have an aging Canon 450d with quite a few lens. I had been planning to take a 17-40L f4.0, a 50mm f1.8 and possibly my 24-70L f2.8 but I am worried that the 450d may not be able to hold up well in the hot, sandy conditions. I am also fighting the urge to upgrade the thing but my budget is about £450 tops and I have been looking at a 7D on ebay...

I also have my Nexus 6P, which produces superb images, even in low light and being a phone obviously is a lot more compact and gives me more flexibility i.e panorama/time shift etc.

I've just got back from the Maldives and took a Sony RX100 with me (for underwater too) and whilst it took some fantastic shots I really wish I had my (new) DSLR with me especially when we were out on dolphin spotting trips and the like as the extra zoom plus the options of filters would've really been beneficial.
Which island are you going to? :)

I don't blame you ;)
You'll be surprised about the amount of photo opportunities there are as the natural beauty of the islands is breathtaking so you really want to capture it as best you can, the first time we visited we only had a cheap point and shoot which simply didn't reflect what we saw and we were very disappointed with the photographic memories we got. That's why I made sure to take better equipment on our subsequent trips and so I'd recommend doing the same.
Royal Island has a good house reef so I assume you're going diving/snorkelling and the beauty underwater is easily comparable to above so make sure you take something with you which can capture that too :)

Why would you not take it? Surely a trip like this is one of the reasons for owning it!
Indeed you're correct here but I am afraid of it just getting in the way due to it's bulk.

I'd probably use it as an excuse to buy an RX100 - lugging a DSLR around is just unnecessary these days.
Also correct imo. I took a look at the RX100 but the latest version is quite costly.

JohnnyG, those photo's still look great and thanks for the heads up all. I think I'll keep an eye out for a cheaper body on Ebay and if I am not lucky I'll take my 450d and hope it does me justice.

You could even look at a second hand 4/3rds or APSC based camera with a pancake prime -they're so much more portable than a DSLR.

I've been using my NX300 with a 30mm pancake almost exclusively as it's easy to put in a coat pocket. Think I'll pick up a 4/3rds based camera like the GX80 next.

Ended up grabbing a 7D from Ebay for a couple of hundred quid. It should arrive this week and I look forward to using it. It is twice as heavy as my 450d though lol. That said it should last me a good while with those specs.

Dude take the DSLR ! I have some friends who are currently travelling the world using there iphone as a camera ! its drives me insane , It baffles me because they could invest in a DSLR and take even better photos .... Take the DSLR and get some amazing photos of your new wife.
