I own a very nice cottage on the Scotland/England border, in a village called Newcastleton. One of our guests damaged one of our plastic chopping boards. It was the large one, from a set of, iirc, 3. They explained it was briefly used whilst on top of the electric hob (which hadn't been used, i.e. it was cold). On leaving the kitchen table, their son accidentally brushed against the knobs on the front of the cooker and turned one of the rings on. He didn't notice. A few minutes later they noticed smoke coming from the area and it was the plastic chopping board melting. They caught it in time to avoid damage to the hob and the rest of the cottage, but the board was slightly warped and melted a patch about 9cm2. They reported it to me (who lives on site) and asked me to replace and let them know the cost. I said not to worry and I'll deduct it from their deposit.
I appreciate accidents happen and as they were honest about the accident, i took a token £15 from their deposit. I did not charge any admin fee, restocking fee etc, nor did i charge for my time, fuel, parking etc to go and buy the new chopping board, which as i said, are only available in sets of 3.
I hope this lovely family appreciated my kind gesture and hope that they are able to tell their friends and family about how they damaged my property and were only charged £15!
