The Mrs has some time off in the first week of October and we were looking to go away somewhere but I am having difficulty working out where.

We want to be somewhere really warm where there is a lot to see but also an opportunity to lay by the pool for a day to unwind. Most of Europe seems to be a bit too cool for that in October except places like Lanzarote (which doesn't have a huge amount going on).

Oh great and mighty GD, give me some inspiration!

Canary islands will certainly give you the temperature and the poolside relaxation you are looking for but as you've said not really meet your criteria for seeing things.

I've never been but would Santorini be a good option?

Also can only guess what reply got deleted above :p

I'd love to go to santorini but the weather isn't supposed to be good at that time of year (chilly winds apparently).

I've been to Malta, wasn't my favourite place in the world I must admit.

I'm just surprised Doofer didn't get there first.

Is a beach a must?

I think lakeside holidays are underrated. Scenery is beautiful, surrounding area not choca-bloc with tourists and screaming kids, prices generally cheaper so you get more bang for buck, absolutely glorious hiking trails depending on where you go and there is plenty of fun to be had renting out water vehicles.

Lakeside is fine by me.

You could look into these places:

Dodecanese Islands, Greece (Rhodes, Kastellorizo, Symi, Fourni and Patmos)

Cyprus (Troodos mountains)

Jordan (Petra, the Roman city of Jerash, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea)

Spain (Seville)

You know when you go to a party and there's this litle 5 year old who tells you a joke and you laugh? They enjoy that, right? So they carry on telling you every joke out of every christmas cracker they've ever had and you get to the point where it's just boring, tedious and you want to fling the kid out a window? That, ladies and gentlemen, is the Rhyl joke.

OP: Having just got back from the Isle of Wight, I can't recommend it enough. It's not the kind of place you go to for a week but a long weekend there is lovely. Not sure about the weather in October though.

Israel. If you want to explore during the day and veg out at night, then Haifa and it's surrounding area would be good. If you want to **** out for a week and do nowt but drink, eat and swim then Eilat is your thing.

We're going to Ibiza on 28th September, i looked at last years weather and it was still mid 20's in the first couple of weeks of October last year there, sea temp was around 25 degrees too. Not too shabby, just check last years weather at the resorts you fancy.

Gambia?

Not somewhere where laying on the beach is a great idea (and the beaches aren't great) but lazing by a pool in a nice hotel would be nice. Lots of sight seeing and stuff to do there too, cultural experience, safari style trips and other bits and pieces.

It's the end of the rainy season in October but it's tropical rain, so sun most of the day and then the potential for a short rainstorm before sun again.

Otherwise Morocco or Tunisia may just be warm enough for you at that time of year. Assuming here that you don't want to fly more than 5-6 hours.

I've been, never had so much grief on beaches. 6am morning run, and gangs of people chasing me trying to sell me stuff. Madness.

Interesting from a people watching perspective. Never seen so many sex tourists in my life. Puts Bangkok to shame. Muslim country so they ship girls in from neighboring countries. Great if your a fat white bloke who wants some action (and AIDS). Or seemingly a white middle aged woman who want's a little dark action.... the 'Real Gambia Experience' as they call it locally....

But yes - hotels are nice and the service is excellent.

Yeah, that said as much as they are annoying, they are not threatening. I think a large part of it is they know there are a lot of women looking for sex so they want to be ultra friendly.

I don't think being a Muslim country has anything to do with the sex tourism however, probably the opposite. A lot of areas in Africa in the tropical and sub tropical regions have thriving sex trades, they are just less visited by Brits. It's a more "secular" Islam, if that makes any sense - no calls to prayer or covered people, it's a totally different culture to that of the North African/middle Eastern countries.

Anyway, it's a great place to go, just be aware of the annoying people on the beaches (which as I said aren't great anyway, and it's the Atlantic so not really somewhere you want to swim). You'll have no issues in and around the hotel pools. The same with the sex tourism, you have to go and find it, it's. Not like there are prostitutes hanging around the hotels (at least the decent ones anyway).

Just somewhere a bit different for the OP, especially if they want to do some sight seeing and want somewhere pretty much guaranteed to be nice and warm.
