looking for some pointers here

I have loads of audio books stashed on a NAS connected to my router

what sort of device is available that I could play them over the network without actually having to use a pc

either that or a device that I could use audible on, again over the network without actually having to power up a pc

I am trying to get rid of an old hi-fi and am looking a for a compact unit that would ideally perform a number of functions so DABor internet radio /wifi streaming and preferably an alarm clock as I sometimes doze off listening to audio books!

doesn't have to be an audiophiles dream as I m likely to be sat right next to it!

Can't help with the first bit, but Sonos supports Audible. Been waiting for it for AGES and they finally added support again this week.

I didn't particularly like my Sonos, so swapped it for a Google Home. Not as good sound, granted, but fine for my kitchen, and easier for my usage (why Sonos doesn't support the BBC iPlayer app is beyond me).

Can't help with the actual stereo bit, as I too have been looking for something that "does it all". Wasn't to worried about DAB, so long as it had internet radio. Wanted BT though, and DLNA support. Couldn't find everything I wanted, so ended up with the Home. However, if you find a stereo that works for you, and has an aux in, then adding a Chromecast audio doesn't cost too much more, and should give you the connectivity you desire. I have one on an old AV amp in my garage, and it works very well for what I want. Just select what I want to listen to on my phone, and cast it to the garage system. Now I do exactly the same to cast to my kitchen speaker.
