I'd like a decent sounding home audio system, but I don't want to spend lots of money. My current aiwa stereo system sounds too bassy, almost drowned by it, and quite flat.

I've noticed there are a few of you that build your own stuff, I don't mind getting my hands dirty, if It'll save me some cash.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I don't want to spend more than £200 ideally, will stretch for something that really is worth it, but still, cheaper the better, and would prefer "best bang for buck" :)

No source needed, just amp and speakers. I'm not fussed about 5.1 or anything, unless it can be had without sacrificing quality at a particular price.

Look on auction site for second hand stereo integrated amplifier and speakers. £200 is really stretching it, but if you buy both that are a few years old you should be able to get something..

The thing is, I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for.

I maybe able to stretch the budget if it can double up to do AV stuff (I.e. I can buy a few more speakers and have 5.1 in the future.)

Just look for stereo integrated amplifiers and standmount speakers, those when new in the £200+ range. Pickup a copy of What Hi-Fi.
