Does anyone have much experience with electronics design?

I am planning a project to build a piece of hardware and then write software to operate it; I understand the theory of the hardware but was wondering if there was anyone who with a bit more experience who I could bounce some ideas off.

The equipment is meant to be a moderately complex metal detector. I need to control a few aspects of the circuit by an automatic program and the output will be fed to a computer via an AtoD converter.

Im certainly no expert, but something like an atmega328 chip may well be what your after (just google it) theyre only £3-£6 or so, should give you the input output your after.

Arduino's are pretty damn good chips. There are 2 in my makerbot that run an extruder and the mainboard (Runs extruder, 3 servo's including control boards)
