Home Button Knackered!

Hi all.

First post, so be gentle.....im an OC virgin :D

The home button on my 16gb iphone is toast! Doesnt work at all. Now, i've sent it off to apple but i assume they're just going to say that you dropped it so tought luck :-(

I was thinking that if i jailbreak my phone then i can use the soft home button app......but it seems you need a working home button to jailbreak a phone. does anyone know any way around this at all?

Looks like the only people that can help are Apple, probably a hardware problem.

what about the jailbreak side of things, any idea idea if you can jailbreak withough needing to use the actual home button?

Mine started not to work like yours, but luckily after I restarted my iPhone it randomly started to work again (this was after days of trying to fix the button physically).I done this after watching a video on youtube stating that there is a problem that if you don't restart your iPhone after a few days, the cache from all the applications that you use is left and causes the handset to be really unstable. (A problem linked to the notorious 2.0 firmware.)

I thought the connection had gone to the home button physically but must have been some phantom software bug.
 
My last 2 phones my Home button has died, on my third now, and it's slowly becoming less responsive

The Genius I took it to last confirmed it was a known issue and it's just hit and miss whether you get one that fails

Will be watching this thread with interest. You on the legitimate iPhone contract or not? I would be very surprised if Apple would do anything for you if your not on 02.

They will, most likely. They may say they can do nothing for you right now but in my experience they tend to either ignore it and say they can't help you jailbreak it (the replacement) again, or strongly imply that maybe you should just put it back to legit and come back and no one will make any note that it ever wasn't.

The people that work in Apple stores are normal people, they do actually want to help out.

Yeah, am on legitimate iphone (as in 02 contract). haven't jailbroken my phone yet. i was thinking of JB'ing it as an alternative if they wont/cant fix it because there's a 'soft home button' app. only problem is that i think you need your home button working in order to JB it in the first place :-(
 
no, you dont need a home button to jailbreak an iPhone, it gets done through the connection to your PC

edit: actually, you might need it to put the phone into DFU mode. try using pwnagetool to jailbreak it and retoring using the custom firmware it generates

doh! i thought i may need.....wonder if there's a way to get around needing it if they dont replace it????

who knows. i'll update the thread as and when i find out a bit more info!

UPDATE!

Well, big surprise.......apple refuse to help. Had my phone back today with a description of Accidental Damage....service declined.....doh!

Yes, i have dropped it....but not for about 2months and its been working fine, bugger!

Gonna ring my home insurance provider and claim on the house insurance, not too worry :-(
