Hello chaps,

I'm trying to ascertain how many people have had issues with home buttons on their various I devices.

On my iPhone 4 it gradually stopped registering double clicks and over about 3 months degenerated into working when it felt like it, necessitating an out of warranty replacement.

And I noticed last week that the home button on my 3 month old ipad 3 was doing the same, now tonight for some reason it's almost completely stopped working, much to my frustration.

After a bit of googling the internet seems to be full of people with the same problem. In both instances I've tried recalibrating them or wiping and restoring to no effect.

Now don't get me wrong, I love iPhones/iPads, but these are expensive premium gadgets and I think this is downright unacceptable. There's one main button on these things and you'd expect it to work consistently and reliably and not just within the warranty period either. I feel like I'm going to need the extended warranty on my pad just because I don't trust it to not break again, which isn't very good really.

So, who else has had the same problems?

Not had the problem on any of my devices I've owned..

iPod touch 1
IPod touch 3
iPad 1
(I own current below)
iPad 3
iPhone 4s

I've had this problem twice with an iPhone 4, I bathed the first problem device in a swimming pool, thus warranting an insurance replacement :p (They'd only been out for 2 weeks!)

Had a 3GS with no problems, and still use a 1st gen Touch with no problems.

Though 4 friends suffer from the iPhone4 home button problem.

I just called Apple (18 days out of warranty) and they sent a collect and replace delivery out within 3 days for free.

I have a sluggish iPhone 4 (launch batch) which sometimes responds to double-clicks and sometimes doesn't.

Original iPad and New iPad are both flawless though.

After three months? Either you aren't keeping it clean, or the button is faulty, or a combination of both.

Take it back to Apple and they will sort it without any issues.

My iPhone 4 had this issue after about 9 months, gradually got worse and worse, definitely a hardware issue and Apple were happy to replace it. No issues with the replacement (wife has it now) or the 4S yet.

After mine was replaced I became aware of just how many times I press the home button each day and it's not surprising they fail every so often (even if it's disappointing).

Had 2 iPod Touch 4G's, both for over a year and had no problems with any part of it.

- You guys aren't crushing the button with your dinosaur fingers are you?

I think all my iPhones apart from my original iPhone had home button problems. My original iPhone i didn't have for that long though due to the 3G coming out within a year.

My iPhone 4 is over 2 years old and has a dead spot on the home button. I do need to replace it but i really just cannot be arsed! :(

Home button on my iPhone 4 rarely works first time now. Usually 3 or 4 presses required before anything happens. Very annoying.

Home button on my iPhone 4 isn't best. Sometimes takes a couple of presses.

This may be if interest to some of you

The button on my iPad 2 is fine but then i hardly ever press it. Prefer to use the 4/5 finger gestures

Home button started playing up on my iPhone 4, it was an Apple replacement after my original had a different fault. As they are refurbished phones maybe the last person abused it. It was out of warranty so I replaced it myself.

Home button went on my partners original iPhone 4 and on my iPhone 4 apple replacement.

So far it's ok on my iPad 3 and I never had a problem on my original iPhone or 3G.

from doing repairs on the home buttons 99% of them have failed due to residue getting inside them, like drinks and water ect, i guess some people dont look after their devices.

My wife had her home button stop working just after a year of having it. Apple wanted around £150 I think, we ended up finding an Apple store that did a phone swap for £55ish.

I've never spilled a drop of anything on either my iphone or ipad, i think there is some kind of design/quality issue.

Same here, might have been a build up of dust but I've never had anything spill on mine and it still stopped working. If it wasn't under warranty then I'd just have opened/replaced it myself but since it failed after only 10 months I just got Apple to replace it and they didn't argue which suggests to me they are aware it was/is an issue.

Yeah I have the same problem with my iPhone 4. Both my iPad 2 and 3 are fine though - but I tend to the the 5 finger pinch gesture for them. I'm hoping they may replace it with a capacitive touch button even though its nice having an analog button - either that or some kind of gesture though thats hard given such a small screen ...
