Hi guys,

I am moving into my new house soon and just putting some finishing touches to my new cinema room.

However, my current sound system is the Sony BDV-E280 and the cable lenght is too short as all the equiptment is going at the back of the room.

I am now after the following.

Something to plug all my inputs into (sky / xbox / 3D Blue ray) that will then feed the image via HDMI to my ceiling mounted PJ and the audio to the speakers, with long cable lenght. It would require at least 1 USB input and wifi would be a bonus but not required.

My current system has the bluray player built in, but can't seem to find anything similar with speakers long enough.

Can anyone reccomend me some equiptment? I am not after super high end as budget is very tight.

Thanks :)

A Separates system ( a AV Reciever) is going to provide easier flexibility and have superior audio, you could even keep your current speakers but would need a new sub. If money is really tight you could buy speaker cable to the length required and attach the 'sony connectors' from your existing kit to the new wire and make do for the time being.

Many thanks for the replies!

Is it easy to extend my current wires? The rear two are 10m long so they fit fine, its the front 3 that aren't long enough. The wires are hard wired into the speakers so can't unplug them?

What are the connections at the ends of the cables like? If they're just bare wires, you could just choc block the ends to another length of cable. If they're some kind of fiddly connection I'd just hack the cables up, and choc block some extra cable between the two ends.

Thanks for the advice, when i get home after work i'll have a look and take some pictures.

Hi,

This is what the end of the speaker cables look like, the end that plugs into the back of the BDV - E280

Think i can chop and extend? If so, could anyone recommend the correct cable?

That's the bit which plugs into the back of the receiver. I doubt you can extend that, how would you remove the plastic head off?

You wouldn't - you'd chop the cable in two in the centre and insert your extension piece there, connecting with choc blocks.

Thanks,

I've got some choc blocks and wire cutters and insulation tape, i just need to hide the extension the best i can!

Is there any specific wire i need? Mine seem to have two wires i need to cut and join.

If you're any good with a soldering iron then that plus some heat shrink tubing will make for far nicer and much much thinner joints that will be miles easier to conceal.

No just match both ends to prevent the speaker going out of phase.

Yep, keeping the phase correct is important.

See the wire marked with the black stripe on your Sony speaker cables; that helps you tell one from he other in the pair. Any additional wire you buy should be similarly marked. Just maintain the marking from original to new to original and it'll ensure that the positive and negative speaker wires for each cable you are extending don't get crossed over.
