Hey guys, wanted to get some input on what subs you are using and what you think of them.

I am considering an impulse upgrade from my current MS309 which is a great little sub to something a little larger, possibly a BK Monolith or a KEF reference TDM45B.

So let me know whats rocking your world and if you like it :)

Thanks guys this is good information.

I am really struggling at the moment, I'd really like to update my MS309 which is OK for my needs but I have put myself in a tough position because my front speakers are pretty good and to get something which will reinforce them and not reduce the over all quality of the sound it prooving tough :(

I don't really want to spend as much as you guys have but it looks like to get anything like the depth I want is going to mean spending £600+ in the secondhand market looking at SVS, big Velodyne and BKs.

you looked at the SvS subs? the peeps over at AVF are well loopy about them. s

I have and unless I can pick up one secondhand then they're out of my price bracket. My one final option which is within the price range (just) is the BK Monolith.

I've owned an SVS PC+ 20-39 and currently own a Velodyne DD15, both awesome subs but look to be out of yours (and most sane people's budgets).

The monolith is well reviewed, but simple physics dictates that small boxes with small drivers can't produce deep bass at high spl. Trade offs are needed but once you've been bitten I'd bet it's very hard to go back..

The Monolith is hardly small :D

The Monolith is no small fry! Maybe your thinking of the XLS200?

I don't have one yet as my front speakers rumble pretty well and I can't really justify spending lots of money on it. I'd like to get one eventually but as MB says, it will need to be something that can reinforce the sound, but mine will also have to be quite small to fit in the fairly small dedicated room.

Sorry, not much help from this post but I'm in a similar situation so I'm watching closely :)

I think I'd need to go 2nd hand as well but I would really want to demo something before I bought it to see if it made a worthwhile difference. This is the problem :/

Your really looking for a sub which will cross over slightly with the lower end of your main speakers (the point at which the roll off i.e. can't really cope with the depth) and then extend lower. I currently have an MS309 which goes slightly deaper then my 103/4s (not heaps lower though) and its OK.

Something like a SVS tube or a bigger Velodyne will be able to go a lot lower but you need some reasonable main speakers as you don't want it to have to handle all the stuff above say 60-80Hz (this is usially set in the av amp)

What main speakers are you using?

Im using a Velodyne SPL 1000mkII at the moment, goes flat to 20hz but I cant help looking out for a DD-12 at the right price-just not sure how im going to pay for it!

Let me know if you find a DD, the SPL-1000 is the kind of speaker I am looking for.
