Home cinema ideas for a room 5m x 3.3m

Hi all, I am after some basic information around my plans for a small home cinema in a house I am looking to buy. I always wanted a home cinema but other things took priority. The house we are looking at has a wasted space behind the garage 4mx3.5m roughly and I wondered what I need to consider with a room this size.

I would be looking at erecting either a brick extension on the back of the garage or one of these, certainly not a shed as it is fully insulated, electric connections, network connections, sound proofing, underfloor heating etc

It would be a rectangular room with a sofa one end, projector mounted to the ceiling and then a screen at the other end. Somewhere to relax watching a film/football and the odd gaming session. I will want to connect a macmini/pc and xbox one to them as a minimum.

Firstly what sort of projector do I need to look at, is there anything specific to look out for based on the size of the room?

What sort of size screen could I have?

If we end up buying the house I will be asking for more advice around audio and source info but for now I want to get to know projectors. No real budget in mind as yet.

Thanks in advance

So interms of the room shape, I think there is around an additional 0.5m I can add to the length of the room as it will be a custom build, either brick or wooden structure, the rooms only purpose is a cinema room so not got to worry about use of space inside as it can be setup to best suit that need.

I will be looking into the sound deadening options, I know as standard they have double glazing, roof, floor and wall insulation with 44mm double wall.

So are we saying that a room 4-4.5m long is plenty big enough for a projector setup. Can anyone point me to a decent purchase guide for projectors so I can start reading up, are there any particular brands to avoid?

In terms of source, it will be my xbox one, MacMini , blue ray films and Sky HD box.

Layout wise, please ignore the crudeness of the diagram below but gives you an idea of the layout I was thinking about, subject to change of course as I may go for a larger sofa.

Budget for projector lets say £1000 but can be flexible if needs be as not really sure how much the cost is for the average projector.

Budget is very flexible so yes I can do what I like to the room, when you say treat it I can choose the finish in the room, I can request dark floors and a plastered finish to the interior. I can then paint and decorate as I wish.

Is the suggest that dark colours across the entire room and black out blinds for the door and any windows?

Thanks for the great advice everyone. Now trying to sort the a house purchase out, but whatever we end up with I will be having some sort of single purpose cinema room so I will be back with more questions for sure.

Stupid question but we are in negotiations about the house I was talking about and been offered two choices, the fancy shed above or a proper brick built room, guessing it's no contest brick build will be the better of the two? Not much difference in cost

The room

Good news is we are now in a position to build our home cinema/home office. We are going with a wood construction garden room to a custom design by a local firm. I have designed the following room making best use of the space available in the corner of the garden, behind our garage.

Going to finalise the design this week and pay a deposit, with delivery around 5 week from now.

As you can see this design allows for an uninterrupted view of a projector screen which will be placed on the wall represented by a TV cabinet in the plans as the software I used didn’t have anything for a project screen. Projector to be located above the sofa, distance to the screen around 4.5m. I will ensure a power supply is placed up high where the project is to be mounted.

My desk is set back at the top of the design and the only tweak would be a window looking out into the garden here so I have some natural light on the desk area.

Room to be fully insulated, tongue & groove interior finish, also looking at under floor heating for winter months. The room will also have 5 double power sockets, two ceiling lights and a wired network connection to our existing home network.

The equipment

I am looking for your advice on the audio visual side of things.

My current shopping list includes:

#Projector Screen – Recommendations required on brands, this will be a permanent screen as a dedicated room. Budget around £150?
#Projector – Recommendations again on this based on size of room and connectivity. Budget around £800-£1000?
#Surround sound – Currently in the lounge we use a Sonos setup of soundbar, sub and two play 1’s. Tempted to mirror this setup so it can connect again via our sonos system for music aswell although open to other options
#AV Receiver to take input from PC/Xbox etc and send a single connection to the projector via a long HDMI cable. What would I need to budget for this? Never use one of these before.
#PC/Mac Mini that can connect to a monitor on the desk as well as the projector. Will be used to connect to Sky/BT sports etc online and played through the projector.

Current equipment owned to be used:

#Electric recliner corner sofa – super comfy
#Xbox One
#iMac

Hi Tweedbean,

Sorry to resurrect a thread but I would love to speak with you regarding your room and what it's like now / spec.

Reason being that I will shortly have approx a 4m x 3m room which I would like to turn in to a cinema room and it's hard to find anything online for suggestions and reviews on a room so small. Can't seem to find a way to message you privately on here either...

Hopefully hear from you soon

Thanks!

Hi there is a second thread where I actually had the room built, check this out and feel free to ask any questions:
