I bought the below speakers second hand last year - all in excellent and working condition and connected up to my Denon X2700H and existing sub.
They are the original versions as opposed to the revised c or i variants

2 x 3050 Towers (Fronts)
2 x 3010 surrounds
1 x 3090 centre

All connected up and gone through the Audyssey app to set up as 5.1 and tested each channel.
No issues came up when I was configuring and have been using for the past few months OK but whenever I watch something at louder volumes, the speakers don't have that ooomph that I was hoping for.

Is there something in the set up I'm missing or are there issues with the speakers?

Also check dynamic volume is on, and set to "light". I find without that on the sound is all very quiet and pants.

Also try the room EQ presets, I think denon have flat/reference how it EQ's the speaker

If that model offers room EQ app support it's about £20 and allows you to tweak further, like where to stop correction, 300hz is a good point, so it only corrects <300hz

Ok so I’ve worked through

Set to Flat where it says to use when you’re sat closer to the speakers in smaller rooms

Set dynamic volume to low

Speakers are all set to small and with 80hz crossovers all round

The AVR is set to front Dolby under amp assign with the Dolby speaker set to none under speaker config. Is that the best option? All the rest seem to be for 7.1 setups or higher
Alternatives that seem to match are zone2 or bi-amp

On the sub, it’s a canton powered subwoofer from my previous system that I’ve kept as it fits where I need it. It’s connnected via mono on the low level input to the AVR, crossover set to 80hz which is also set as the crossover under the LPF to LFE setting

No you want the bottom dial all the way clockwise. You'll need to do AVR setup again.

If your AVR has a option for low pass for the sub, set that to 120hz

Also when the AVR shows channel level for subwoofer you want that around 00db. If it's -12db or +12db (extreme range) you need to adjust subwoofer gain knob to compensate and run AVR setup again.

Ok so bottom dial for crossover is all the way to the right now (150hz)
I’ve changed the LPF for LFE setting to 120hz

Changed subwoofer to 0db

When you say run AVR setup again, do you mean the Audyssey setup?
Should I keep to Front Dolby (but dolby set to none) or use a different preset like zone 2 or bi-amp (as I know my front speakers have the metal jumpers across the 2 sets of terminals)

Gain dial on the subwoofer itself depends, but I'm talking of the AVR channel level for the sub, you want that to show around 00db. If it's way too high or low, then adjust the gain dial on the sub , then run auto setup again.

Yes full auto setup again.

I don't know about the dolby setup I don't have a Denon. I wouldn't bother with biamping your speakers, but if you do ensure you remove the bridging links on the speakers, do not connect two amplifiers to one speaker with the links in place.

I have had Denon and now Marantz. I believe, amp assign for a regular 5.1 setup should just be 7.1. no zone 2 or biamp like that. They're for specific type of setups. :)

Edit: just reading the manual online now for you

Thanks, just read it and it says 5.1 can be set with any mode
Yep so out of all of the 7.1 modes that support a basic 5.1 setup, you'd choose surround back and then those would be set to none. Leaving the fronts, center, sides and sub all enabled. :)

Gone through all the setting changes (I think), re-done the setup with my sub as per the photo

Audyssey recognised the 5.1; calibrated everything but got the AVR showing -12DB for the sub level
Do i need to turn up the gain on the actual sub to change this to get closer to 0DB?

Played a couple of bits from films (song from k-pop which my missus said audio was cutting out mid song and pod race from star wars)
Sounded better but still seemed to lack some punch

Just to add :) what volume are you at? If it helps I know it's all relative but for TV I use -50 but for Dolby films I often have to go to -40. I also try and use +Neural:X wherever possible as I find it louder.

It sounds like you are making progress though. Which is cool.

Not 100% sure on the sub question as I still need to buy myself one! But I think if Audyssey set your sub to -12 dB, the gain on the sub is too high. The subwoofer was likely too loud during calibration, and Audyssey ran out of room to turn it down.

Turn the subwoofer’s gain knob down (around 10-11 o’clock), then rerun Audyssey. You want the final trim to land somewhere between -6 dB and +3 dB. -12 dB means Audyssey ran out of room to turn the sub down.

-12db on the AVR means the volume control on the subwoofer itself is too high, you need to reduce it on the sub.

Depends when and what i'm watching but if its films its high 40's into the 50's

I've got it all running through my Apple TV so Dolby Vision and audio

Thanks, changed that and also adjusted the gain on the sub to the 10-11 o’clock position. Reran setup and came back at -4db

Didn’t get chance to try watching anything but will try tomorrow to see how it sounds
