I'm running Kerio Connect mail server on my server at home, this is working very well when I'm outside my home network but the problem is that when I'm at home DNS will resolve to my external IP address which is not a problem on my PCs as I can edit the host file but this cannot be done on my iPhone and iPad. Therefore I'm looking for a DNS server that will run on Windows 7 Pro (64bit) and then get my router to dish out my server as the primary DNS server.

I've tried MaraDNS but this doesn't quite do what I need.

I need smithtek.co.uk to resolve to 172.31.0.5/24 when at home.

I don't really want to have to use a server OS as I don't want to have to buy a server AV.

Any suggestions please?

What router have you got? Some support NAT loopback (if you run a custom firmware, e.g. DGTeam I'd imagine most will) which will let you use your external IP without any DNS changes.

This is a better idea. You'll find that when your phone slips into standby, shuts off WiFi and does email push via mobile data, it'll try and use the internal IP and fail to connect. (this from experience!)

If you are feeling keen you could set your own DNS server.

Does openDNS allow you to enter your own records? And for that matter would it allow you to put a private IP as a record?

I've found Simple DNS http://www.simpledns.com/
I've installed the 14 day trial and it does exactly what I'm after. It's $79 but worth it for me (for 5 zones)

Gonna have a look out for other clients and also test Simple DNS fully.
