Hey folks, just a quick and simple question regarding home dvd recorders i.e. the ones you plug directly into your TV.

The question is once you burn a program to a an empty dvd disc, can you later append another program to that same disc?

Example:

JoeB records an episode of Eastenders(yeah sad I know but its just an example :p ) on Monday on to a DVD disc. The following day he wishes to record an episode of The Bill onto the same disc without recording over the previously taped episode of eastenders.

Can what has been detailed in my example be done via a home dvd recorder? If so do only certain home dvd recorders have the function and does it also depend on the format of the dvd disc being used?

Any help much appreciated :)

I would guess that you can burn more than one thing per disc, otherwise it would be pretty useless using dvds when 30mins of tv would probably fit onto a cd. My parents have one at home, but I've never used it or been interested enough to ask. If no-one else replies, I'll give them a call and find out.

On my DVD recorder you can record as many programs as you want (space permitting). It automatically records to empty space, so you don't have to worry about getting it in the right place like you would a tape.

You can also preview what you've recorded onto a DVD and it plays it in a little window while you go through the menu. Mine also adds the title of the program recorder to the file name, which is pretty handy.

Others might be different though.

It's a SONY RDR-VX410 and it's a DVD and VCR in one. It cost about £300 but you might be able to find it cheaper now.

Yep, you can continue to burn to the disk on even the cheapy Matsui recorders. Basically if you are using a non-erasable media (not DVD RAM. DVD RW) you can continue to add content till its full up. In order for it to play on a normal DVD player you can finalise the disk which will then write an end record which will stop you recording further.
Personally I have a Panasonic DMRE55 which supports DVDRAM, while being incompatible with most standard DVD players it gives you the ability to edit the disk and also timeslip recording. It also can record to DVD-R (IIRC)

Yup i have a cheapy goodmans or alba, that cheap i cant remember, but you just
set your record quality and off you go stop and start buring at will.

You cannont record over the already recorded stuff you have to "erase" it!

For £60 works a treat and beats videos by far

Alternatively save up for that little bit longer and get something with a HD in too.
We bought a DVD recorder towards the end of last year, well that was the original plan.
In the end we bought the Toshiba DVD/HD recorder instead (DVD-R/DVD-RAM & 160GB HD).
We actually record 95% of the time to HD and then if there is anything we record that somebody wants to borrow or we want to keep for a long time we burn it (after editting) to DVD.

Some of the Liteon and similar DVD/HD units sell for well under £200 these days.

A good Liteon DVD Recorder under £200 is the 'Liteon LVW 5115 my cousin has one & it plays everything ! plus records in nicam too.
