Home file server/ Media server what do you use?

Home file server/ Media server what do you use? I'm running out of space on my external drives, approx 700mb, so I'm looking for a cheap but bigger alternative that I can use with my laptop. A backup and storage rather than performance is the main aim. Oh and dirt cheap!

I just have a p4m desktop with 5 h/drives connected via a network and just map the drives.
