we have a home file server sharing some music and movies folders, there are 4 other computers that connect to it, 2 macs 1 linux and 1 xp, im having problems with the xp system (typical), when in the network connections folder the icon for the HOME domain is there but when you click on it it seems to be empty, as far as i can tell I have all the settings correct and im just about pulling my hair out at this.

Is it a domain or a workgroup? If domain is the XP machine XP professional or XP home?

Can you ping any of the other machines from the XP machine?

Is the subnet the same for the network card on all the machines?

Start with ping tests first. ipconfig /all will also give you lots of info on the XP machine as to its network status.

In your connection properties make sure all relavent items are checked, i noticed on mine that Client for Microsoft Networks was unticked.

This was obviously preventing xp from seeing shared files on my other PC, but the vista PC was still able to gain access.

Ive no idea why it was unchecked, maybe yours is the same...
