Would just like to say how suprised I am at the difference a BT Home Hub has made to my broadband. I was on the verge of changing to Sky due to constant disconnections and varying speeds but they sent out a Home Hub the other day so I tried it out and cast my Linksys to one side.

The conn has been completely stable and download speeds have actually improved. Setup was easy, although was a pain on the family PC, not because of the Home Hub but because of the state that PC is in. :p

Also impressed at the USB networking functionality and that it can route landline calls to the Home Hub phone.

Pretty nifty if I'm honest.

It's pretty good, although it does have its moments.

Until a recent firmware upgrade it wouldn't count over 2GB of traffic, it would just stop.

It's definitely a far superior piece of kit to the BTHHv1, although the v1 was a lot more hackable. :)

I was using the BT Homehub v2 for a bit and was very impressed, and wanted to continue using it if it wasn't for a VPN problem.

Does anyone else notice that this router would drop VPN connection if they idle for 5 mins or more? I'd connect to a VPN on Windows/OS X and it would be active and working as long as I keep it active, but after 5 mins of inactivity it would drop resulting in me having to reconnect?

Defintely the router, cos my Netgear did not have this problem before and after the homehub was used!

How can I persuade BT to send me a v2 HH?

I managed it easily, emailed them saying Ive been a customer for 8 years or so and I think I deserve a free v2 hub, 2 days later it arrived at my door free of charge :)

Have to agree, we recently got sent a HH v2 and it's a nice bit of kit - very easy to setup and get going with and our 8mbps connection has been steady as a rock since we upgraded :)

Nice bit of kit, annoying though, it sometimes updates itself, and likes to do it (well ours does) at 5.30pm just when your in the middle of something.

LOL, stokes ;)

Ring them up with your hub unplugged from the phone socket, tell them there aren't any lights on it whatsoever. Go through the processes they run you through, tell them there was lightning the other day... etc.

:D Nice plan, but I'm such an internet addict I'm not sure if I could stand having no internet access while I wait for the new hub

:p

I know someone who got a homehub2 delivered to his house by mistake last week (lucky him).
It was left in his back yard with a note pushed through his door saying 'left in back yard'.
'No signature' was required.
I presume can happily keep the router if the courier does not call back for it?

He's currently using a Netgear DG834gt & connects at 3.5mbits & does not use wifi.
His ISP is not BT but he's on a BT landline.

If he uses the router:
* does it have to connect to BT broadband?
* will it be better than his old Netgear?
* will BT be able track this 'missing' router if connected?
* he has not opened the box yet, does it come with a phone, if not how much are they?

sorry lots of questions but my m8 keeps bugging me, thinking i know about this stuff lol.
thanks guys

Sorry to disagree, but the homehub is a pile of poo. I originally had a V1, which was shocking (and broke), and now have a V2, which is much improved, but I prefer the DG834 any day. The firmware on the hub is designed to be idiot-proof, but is just annoying to use. The Wifi range is poor for a G router compared to the Netgear, and the line sync speed is about 50% of what I should be getting as I tried my old wired router and it was twice as fast and stable. With the wired router I used to be able to get 7.2mbps, now over time that has become 4.4mbps, but with the homehub I'm lucky to get it synced at 2.1mbps!

Wireless (when connected) is stable enough, which is better than the belkin routers, of which many have dropout issues I've found.

We got sent a V1 when we took out broadband with BT. OMG, what a load of trash. It had wireless, but no wireless security, whatsoever. No WPA, not even MAC filtering.

Also it would sync at about 2.5-3MBit on a 6MBit connection, and stay there.

It also used to freeze up randomly and require a reset.

Admittedly i've not tried a V2 but it must have been an improvement of cosmic proportions.

I wonder if an ISP giving away a router is like a mobile phone company giving away a phone, where you get a seemingly expensive phone for free because they make so much money from your monthly payments.
Does that mean if we change suppliers every year we'll get a free new router too?
Why dont they send me a nice new router at my renewal day :p
