currently have the following setup in place

1 virgin home hub in router mode
2x Archer C6 routers one upstairs one downstairs acting as hubs/ wireless access points
both have the same ssid which is janky as it comes but it works (most of the time and generally provides good coverage,

the problem is mobile devices generally wont switch from one device to the other without a wifi on and off and whilst its a small inconvenience i am getting it in the neck from the OH so looking for a possibly cheap and easy solution that will give me a proper working mesh network without losing any quality (once their connected to the right router the speed is fantastic as both are giving excellent coverage and connection across both floors.

would something like a pair of APs connected to the routers be an effective solution or possibly change the routers all together?

no real budget in mind but anything extravagent would need real justification. also currently on a 350meg package but contemplating switching to Gig1 now its available so something with the ability to handle this would be a bonus but not essential (most of the important stuff is hard wired PCs xbox tv etc its just a couple of laptops tablets and phones connected to wifi and tbh if there could be somesort of automatic switch over for the routers (maybe i've missed something somewhere) it wouldnt be an issue at all

£6 O2 SIM, VM should then be willing to provide you with a SH4 and upto 2 free wireless mesh boosters, the last I read, it wasn’t actually bad as they appear to have bought in a reasonable system. They will provide a 3rd if required, but it requires an engineer visit from memory.

The other budget option is Huawei routers in mesh mode, cheap and you seemingly already have wired backhaul available. Failing that actual mesh with wired backhaul, but it gets expensive compared to the Huawei option.

What’s expensive in this case

I baulked looking at the near £1000 setups etc but if a reasonable solution is available for a few hundred then I’d be interested

Tp link P9. It's a mesh system with powerline. Got a set for my parents and only needed 2 out of the 3 nodes as its that's good. Connected to the Virgin superhub in modem mode. App is great too.

Usually sale for about 150 for 3 pack

Another vote for the TP link system I have put in 4 e4 systems and use one myself.. Never had issues with my 3 unit setup or the 3 other systems I put in for other people.. Easy setup reliable.. Great system

I have recently purchased a BT whole home WiFi trio pack refurbished direct from the supplier for £99.99, they also do a duo pack for around £69.99 IIRC. I've just googled, looks like they are currently out of stock but do appear to come back regularly rather than a one time offer.

I'm currently using them in conjunction with VM 350mbit and I can't fault the performance so far from them.
