Hi

I am looking to get a NAS that connects via ethernet. Mainly at the IcyBox and Netgear (One that has free 500gb hdd most places). However most of these seem limited to 1.5TB, are there any <£200 that can hold more then 1.5TB?

Cheers

Low power Atom/Ion based system + FreeNAS = As much space as you want (or as much as your case can hold). The only limit is your budget really, and you could easily get a 2TB+ solution sorted out for a tad over £200.

Would prefer an pre-made NAS as it is not for myself, anyone know of any others that allows more hdd space then 1.5TB (which seems quite low for a NAS)

I use FreeNAS and rather like it. It is miles more secure than the ones on store selves. It does end up costing more but the features are miles ahead of any other NAS solution other than the top of the range models.

The other option is to look into ones that allow for HDD expansion via USB which is quite common, but I don't know how good they are etc. But if you are wanting 2TB+, I think you are going to have to spend more.

That cost doesnt include the hdds btw, but just the core unit. What kind of spec would you put in a NAS build?

FreeNAS works great with low spec machines. Anything Pentium 3 onwards work fine really. 1Ghz+ and you have room to spare. The question is, whats the smallest, cheapest PC you can find.
