Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing a small two disk nas unit for home, I've got two spare 1tb disks ready and waiting. What I want to do is the use the nas as the central storage (no problems there) but I also want to back up the nas to an external usb 1tb hard drive say once a week.

This is were this thread comes in, I've been looking at various types around the 100 pound mark and unless I'm going blind nobody seems to mention being able to do what I want to do. Much talk of backing up devices to the nas but not the other way round.

So, who has a two disk nas at home? Do you back it up to a pendrive/external hd? If yes, how?

I know this could be classed as a hardware thread, but it's a software question that I'm after answering, so I put in here :)

It'd push the budget up a bit over the £100 specified but have a look at Synology, their diskstation software is pretty feature rich and looks to do what your after...

https://www.synology.com/en-uk/dsm/5.1/software_spec

Server Backup
Local Backup

Back up data to encrypted/unencrypted shared folders
Back up data to externally attached USB/eSATA drives
File-level incremental backup
Back up ACL settings
Back up system configurations
Schedule backup tasks

np, they're definitely worth a look into if you're after something like that. I have a DS412+ that I'm pretty happy with. The only 'bad' thing I can say about it is that I always feel guilty that I don't use anywhere near the number of features it has !

I must be blind and stupid today, but do you get the disks with the units?

ignore that, I've read a review on the rainforest which explains that you don't get the disks..

God, I'm going back to bed.. :)
