OK, here is the network I have just setup:

netdiag.JPG

Both computers can access the internet no problem, but how can I make them see each other? I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to networking :o

various ways of doing it but try going to :

start> control panel> network setup wizard.

IIRC. This sets up your first pc to share the drives and then lets you save a program that you run on your second computer to do the same. Then all you have to do is go to Windows explorer and click on "network places" and the computers should see each other.

I already ran the network setup wizard, but the problem is the downstairs PC can't see the wireless network, it is connected to the router via Ethernet. And vice-versa for the upstairs PC, it can only see the wireless network but not the other computer connected via Ethernet.

Have both machines got file and printer sharing on? (Right click the network in network connections in control panel and go to properties, tick boxes near the top, should be one for file and printer sharing ticked.)

Do the PCs have firewalls on?

Check the IP of the wireless one then try and ping it from your other wired machine, does it reply ok?

To find your IP addresses, go to Start/Run/cmd
in the command window type ipconfig /all and press enter.

Do this on both machines and the the first three groups of the IP addresses should be the same, eg 192.168.1.xxx

OK, sorted. It was the firewall settings on both machines. I have disabled the firewalls and am just using the router's firewall.

Both machines can now see and access each other.

Thanks for your help guys.
