Hi all,

Im hoping you can help me with a scenario please

* Weve decided to go with NTL in our new home
* We have 2 desktop PCs
* 1 is in a bedroom with an NTL box, the other is in a bedroom without

A) Would a wireless modem have a negative effect on my online gaming, baring in mind Im an absolute geek of a PC gamer and would cry at the though of my ping going up by 20ms.

B) The ony other option would be to lead a cable from one bedroom to the next, under the carpet. Is that feasable? Would I still lose any signal due to the cable being longer?

C) Can anyone reccomend any modems, wireless or standard that would ensure there would be no signal loss between bedrooms. What network protocol do I use? I want the best signal possible as I may want to use my Sony PSP downstairs as well.

Cheers guys

i would buy a wireless cable router

here is a list of wireless cable/dsl routers ocuk sells

Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router (NW-010-NG)

Belkin 125Mbps Wireless-G Router (F5D7231UK4) (NW-021-BE)

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch (NW-000-LS)

Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX (NW-039-LS)

Linksys WRV54G Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router (NW-008-LS

ZyXel Wireless ZyAir 802.11g 125Mbps 334WT Cable/DSL Router (NW-011-ZY)

You can use any wireless cable/dsl router that supports DHCP..
DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol".

you will also need a wireless adaptor for each pc that you want to be wireless
make sure your ntl modem as a eathernet port on the back, or if your using a setup box and your net comes from that make sures its also got a eathernet port on it

good luck

A. Depends on walls, interference etc. The only way to know for sure is try it and see.
B. Provided the cable's less than 100m, won't be a problem
C. Linksys WRT54G/GS, provided it isn't a v5. You aren't after a modem though, it's a router - you keep the NTL cable modem.
As for network protocol, er TCP/IP...

thanks guys. so if I decide just to use a wired router and feed a cable to the other bedroom, does the PC using the modem need to be turned on for the other PC to access the internet?

No, the modem wil be plugged into the router, so anything connected to the router can access it independently.
