Home Network infrastructure. What should I look out for?

He won the lottery or something? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm also money should not be an issue here. :) Futre proof it too.

Cat6, standard cat6 ethernet sockets. with a 24 port patch panel and a 24 port switch IMO. Could go for a gigabit network throughout the house.

An 8 port router will look after all of this (possibly 10 port) and should also Ideally be wireless. Each wall socket will terminate at this router.
So you want a star network then. Chances are if its to 8 rooms you want atleast 2 points in them all incase you ever decide to have more computers in them or servers running or whatever.

Is CAT5e crossover cable what I want to be looking at?
If your using a switch then standard cable will be fine. Crossover is used if they go to the same device (pc to pc) but these days it really doesn't matter what cable is used because most devices are auto sensing.

Also, if I want wireless, should I be looking at a 4 port wireless router and a 8 - 10 port switch?
That's if your going to put 1 point in 8 rooms. A 4 port wireless will be ok. You should look into a N network if your going wireless.

Thanks for the advice. No he hasn't one the lottery. £3m is nothing in the Sandbanks area which is where he currently lives. He used to be a sales rep before making a killing converting barns in Norfolk into luxury houses.

He drives a £117,500 Bentley Continental GT too :(

Is his Bentley Silver/Grey, I might have seen it around.

Not meaning to sound rude, but if he really is a friend you should find someone else to do it.

sidethink pointed out the things you should be looking at, I know I'd be gutted if I had my £3m house built, then later found out about differant technologys I could have had but the house is not equiped for.

Do your friend a favour and get someone in who can do justice to his house.

TDF.

Sorry to comment on this, but run one cable from the router to the switch. The rest of the ports on the router should not be used. This ensures only internet traffic will travel down to the router and no other data.

No Blue sorry. I agree. I think I might just advise and arrange for the company to come in and sort it then charge him a grand for the priveledge of my expertise :p

Well said, so many people forget this.

Hi all,

A friend of mine who happens to be building a £3m house  has asked that during the electrician install, I swing along and rig the house up with CAT5e network cables terminating in at least 8 rooms at wall sockets.

I have no issues doing this and the house will be in such an early build that it will be a walk in the park.

What I would like is to know what I should look out for.

Types of cables to use, types of wall sockets to use, etc.

An 8 port router will look after all of this (possibly 10 port) and should also Ideally be wireless. Each wall socket will terminate at this router.

TIA

How about telling your m8 to get the electrician to do it while he wires the house?

Must should be able to do this without a problem, and all you have to do is finish the ends.

Thats an option I was looking at and assume the cabling has to be 'e' rated (CAT6e etc) to be run close to power cables??

I read some nightmare stories about electricians ballsing up data installations but if I am just getting him to do the cable runs to boxes in the walls and a patch panel location then the rest is a doddle! :o

Thanks for commenting on that. Yes, something I forgot to mention. 1 flow of data cable to the wifi kit. Ensure perfect data flow. It's how I have my network. Except its 2 per room in 4 rooms.

EDIT, you could also get it STP cable. This will shield it from electric cables. But remember, you will need to use STP connectors (RJ45).
