hello to all!!,

I'm hopeing someone can shed some light on a network issue i've got.

i have a pc that has xp pro running and a laptop with vista. I've run the home network setup on both and assigned them both with the same workgroup name.

I restarted both and allowed a drive to be shared. i then tried to view work group computers and they where both listed. i tried to open one but got the error message "(workgroup name) isn't accessible. you might not have permissions to use this network resource" I am currently logged as admin on both machines.

I decied to test network connectivly with a ping (this is where is gets odd) i'm able to ping the laptop from the pc but not from the laptop to the pc. i have a router sat in the middle and as far as i can see all configured right. i've set up home networks before but this one has me stumped.

Please help as i'm getting a blad patch where i keep scrathing my head!

thanking you all in advance

I'd love to know this for future reference too, I get it loads.

Another interesting thing I found is, when I had first installed Vista on this PC, the workgroup was WORKGROUP, on the laptop it wouldn't of been that, but I could still connect and delete things.

Have you tried directly mapping the network drive in 'My Computer'?

cheers for the reply,

I just tried it but it doesn't like at all. "the network path \\pc could not be found"

untill i somehow manage to be able to ping the pc from the laptop i not going to be able to c anything.

why would the ping not work???? it works one way but not the other. couln't it be half dupluxing or somting (knowage getting stranied now!!)

cheers

decied to turn firewall off while trying to get this to work. internet all ok as i'm able to post here.

????????????????????????

ok,

I've managed to get both pc and laptop on a home network. they can now see each other and share files from shared folders. the only way i managed to do this was to boot up my pc in to vista (duel boot with xp) and assinged the right workgroup name.

this proves that the network is sound and that both machines can indeed see each other.

The problem now is that i don't have a vista sound card driver for my pc yet and so i'd like to contiune to use xp.

This still gives me the problem that i can't get either of the machines to see each other while one is running vista and the other is running xp. is this a known issue? or is a driver or somthing missing that will allow the connections?

Currently when i try to access and network drive i get (on laptop with vista) "can't find network path" while on pc still with xp) i get "you might not have the right rights to access this drive please contact adminisartor."

if anyone can shed any light on the subject i would be very happy.

cheers in advance again!!

What usernames are you using to logon to each PC? What passwords do those users have. Is the XP firewall off, you sure?

cheers for the reply.

user names and passwords are the same on both machines. i have turned the firewall off and installed the lltd thingy on the xp machine.

Having just restarted xp it still gives me the (workgroup name) is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource" and on vista i still get the "cannot access \\desktop"

help please!!!!!

ok i have an update...

i've managed to map to a shared folder on my vista machine. I did it useing the ip address. vista asked for the user name and password but i put them in and saved it. all ok.

I still can't get vista to access any shared folder on my xp machine. i can see the pc in the network map but cant access it.

any ideas?????
