I need to sort out my home network. I've put in some Cat6a cable into most rooms, These will be terminated in faceplates. I'll do every room eventually but we have 7 bedrooms, two reception rooms, dining room and a large man cave.

And low on funds after the £14k surprise of needing a whole new CH system

I'm after a decent router (already have a virgin superhub MK2). I've been looking at the R8000 netgear nighthawk but am open to other suggestions.

I know wired is better and for the most part things will be wired but I could also do with decent wireless as a backup and for work phones etc.

I'm a KODI user via Amazon FireTV in a number of rooms and would like to be able to route this through a VPN to access american shows etc (Netflix)

So do I go wired as much as possible. Get a decent router and poss a couple of Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE UniFi AC1200

The house was built in 1908 and is over 3 floors with a games room/ gym in the garden, Hence the 3 pack of AP's

Any Ideas

Unless you have any special requirements it's usually the wireless side of ISP supplied routers that's an issue.

If you're planning on installing Unifi access points then there's no point spending money on a router with high-end wireless. Just buy as many APs as you need to cover the building and wire them all back. Leave the router wireless disabled.

If you buy UniFi APs (which are really good for the price) then you might as well buy them with someone else hosting the controller for you. It adds about £3 to the price to have 3 years of the hosted controller, which is far more convenient than trying to run your own.

I spotted the cloud hosted controller but didn't know what that meant. I take it its not as easy as plugging them all in to the main router and away I go.

Can the above be used with a VPN (pia or other) for netflix etc. Can I set up an SSID just for KODI to connect to

You can do what you want with the actual client traffic, the management traffic is just a connection to a controller that is either hosted yourself on a Mac/PC/Raspberry Pi/Cloud Key, or by someone else for a price that makes it not worth hosting it yourself.

If you wanted a Kodi SSID then you can do that and just drop it onto a different VLAN. I'd be more inclined to give all Kodi devices IP addresses in a known range and route traffic from those IPs that isn't destined for your local LAN over a VPN.

You can have it installed on a PC and just run it when you want to update them or change settings on them.
