Hi all

Need some help with my network set up.

I am moving from a ADSL broadband to Cable.

Current Set Up

Phone line comes in downstairs, and my ISP fitted an extension to my upstairs study which has the Router (+Modem). From the router are my Cat5 wires going to various room around the house.

Problem with Cable

I have been told that when they fit the cable broadband, the router must be within 16 feet of the entry point of the phone line. Currently my extension is over 30 feet.

Future Set Up 1

New cable router goes in downstairs hallway, which then uses an existing Cat5 cable and goes upstairs where I have a switch to allow for use for all my other 'wires'

Future Set Up 2

The termination box goes in the hallway and the ISP say they can extend the wire upstairs for a fee of £50. I do not know if this has any negatives.

Future Set Up 3

The entrance box has a cable outside and the termination box goes in the upstairs study along with my current setup. The ISP say they can do this for £120. I do not know the positives or negatives for this.

Or if you can think of any other ways, whilst keeping my current wired set up....

Any suggestions as to which would be the best way to go?

I can try and draw a diagram later if this would be of more use.

Cheers

Hello,

If it was me I would definitely go with the first option. No sense in paying extra money for them to do it for you. From my experience companies will only run wire in the simplest of places. Such as tacking it to door frames and skirting boards. Which doesn't look great anyway!

So yes go wih the switch option as I believe you already have the Ethernet cable in place? Do you only uses wired networking?
