Hi,

I've got a D-link DIR-615 (Came with Virgin Media internet) and i'm connecting to the other computer via homeplugs (Solwise 85Mbps).

Copying a file from one computer to the other seems to peak around 700-800kps which seems slow..

Is this normal for my setup or can it be improved?

Cheers
David

What speed are the homeplugs syncing at? I had some 85Mb homeplugs that would barely sync faster than about 5Mb, due to the wiring.

If you are getting 700-800KB/s then that's about 7-8Mb. If it's 700-800Kb/s, then there is not something not quite right.

How do I find out what speed they are syncing?

I grabbed an app called LAN speed test and got these results..

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I can't make sense of them of course, hence asking on OCUK :P

I was going to say a whole bunch of stuff in here, but I reread PistolPetes post and he's perfectly right.

So I'll just say
MBps = megabytes per sec
mbps = megabits per sec (so divide by 8 to get the above)

You LAN test shows 9mbps network speed which is consistent with your 700-800KBps file transfers. Which is either wiring, the homeplugs, the networking kit in your two boxes, or the boxes themselves are holding things up.

I tried homeplug and found it significantly worse than wifi. Other people I know love it and use it where they can't use wifi.

Thanks for the replies.

I just tried to copy a file from my PC to my laptop via wireless and got 3mb/s..
So its just the other computer that is using a homeplug.

However, the internet on the homeplugged PC can get over 1mb/s and that's using the homeplugs..

Surely that's the same thing so the network should also get over 1mb/s??
