I’ve been adding bits and pieces to my network for a couple of years now and I need some help/advice on ways to improve its layout, if possible.

Currently I have the ONT in the living room and this is connected to my router – UCG Max. I then have ethernet from the router out through the front wall and around the house to my upstairs computer room where it plugs into a USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE Switch.

Other kit connected to the UCG Max:
  • TV
  • Humax Freesat Box
  • Reolink Doorbell
  • Shield Pro
Other kit connected to the USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE Switch:
  • Synology NAS
  • PC
  • AP LR x 2
  • Firestick in bedroom
All the kit is wired.

I want to add a camera to cover the garden and this will be routed through the wall and plugged into the switch upstairs.

Without having to do anything major is this going to be the best setup? I’m not as sprightly as I once was so minimal physical activity making any changes would be appreciated . It all works but trying to see if I can tidy it up.

seems like a tidy setup already. Are you getting 2.5gbe between the UCG and the switch? assuming the camera will be a PoE unify camera?

Thanks, it shows as 2.5gb on topology and only my pc has 2.5gb, all my other kit is only 1gb. I have ordered a 2.5gb adapter for my Synology NAS so will try that out when it comes. It will be a unifi PoE camera when I get round to buying one. I also want a unifi doorbell and was going to get the lite but the chime for it has poor sound reviews and I need something with some oof as my wife is hard of hearing.

I mainly posted this as I always seem to see peoples layouts with all their kit in one place whereas mine is upstairs and downstairs.

Its fine to daisy-chain stuff as long as the data link between is adequate. Its not ideal but everyone does it when they have to. I have a 5Gbps copper link (flaps at 10Gbps and its built into the house) from the router to one upstairs bedroom then via a switch to three rooms wired 1Gbps each plus 2.5Gbps for the WAP. Not Ubiquiti though. Single point of failure is the downside.

Thats weird, i was just looking at the doorbell lite, and just watched a video on using a regular door chime using a "shelly"
