Home network upgrade - passing wan to another room

We moved have been having WiFi troubles ever since moving to a house with thick walls and three storeys. Currently using an ASUs ac87u which is great apart from WiFi coverage. I’m not much of an expert on networks….

We have virgin wired into our basement which is where cat 6 cables for each room also terminate (sadly only one cable per room). Router in a basement is obviously poor for WiFi. I’ve tried it in various rooms and can’t get good coverage everywhere.

Looking at upgrades to improve wifi whilst ideally enabling me to use the cat 6 ports in each room for things like consoles/Apple TV’s etc and access points. Also interested in putting the cctv etc on a separate VLAN (I think)

My options seems to be:

1) Place the ASUS in the basement, add a switch and then add access points for WiFi in a couple of rooms.

2) Get a managed switch to connect all the Ethernet ports, pass the WAN over a VLAN to another room which would have the router and I could then add access points to improve coverage.

In both cases I’m looking at ubiquiti access points. The debate seems to be whether to buy a ubiquiti router (UDM?)and managed switch or go with a basic switch and keep the ASUS router (assuming it’s able to do the VLAN wan thing)

Am I missing any other options / totally misunderstood this?

Sounds like you want to put wifi access points in various rooms. You can put switches in those rooms so there are free ethernet ports. I'm not seeing the need for managed switches.

It also sounds as if you're mixing up your terminology. A WAN is upstream of your router, not a wifi network - that's a wireless LAN. And VLANs are a wholly different thing: a logically distinct and separate network. You probably want three wifi networks: one for you, one for guests, and one for IOT devices and whatnot. You will likely want three VLANs: one for you comprising the wired LAN and your personal wifi network, one for guests (wifi network only), and one (LAN and wifi network) for IOT devices etc.
