Home network - where do I start?

I still prefer the Windows Live Mesh method. You get copies on each machine then. I've got it running on my fileserver too, which I've set to make backups at certain intervals during the day.

Putting it all on a NAS is putting all your eggs in one basket, a basket that needs other computers to access it!

Unfortunately, you only get 5gb on mesh and if both computers need to be one, it ,kind of defeats the object really. Back to NAS. Are synology bays much quicker when used wirelessly?

I wouldnt bother with any of this to be honest.

I have the asus RTN-56U router and you can add an external hard drive to that via USB. I dont actually use it like this becuase its connected to the pc downstairs and I never switch it off so its kinda pointless for me but could be usefull for you. Also, I have a pc upstairs and this is connected via a 30 meter Cat5e cable. I have just used windows media to share files to this PC and vice versa. I will often go up to the bedroom to watch a movie or whatever and have no trouble to stream movies from the downstairs PC. Also copying files between the two PC isnt to shabby. I have a HDR-FOX T2 that is also connected to this setup and I can stream my TV shows to either PC and watch them upstairs or downstairs if the wife is watching the TV at the same time.

Performance - File Sharing

I ran a file copy of our standard ripped-DVD test folder and measured write speed of 7.6 MB/s and 9.5 MB/s with FAT and NTFS-formatted drives, respectively. Reads came in at 13 MB/s for both formats. This performance is typical of embedded router file servers.

I posted this as per the OP`s request for the cheapest option although I dont use my drive connected to the router it is still connected to my PC via USB and it might take a few mins to copy over a DVD for example to the PC upstairs and I agree a few more mins for a file that is 16gig in size its quite a bit better than the 0.57meg/sec that the op was getting over wireless. I understand they are not the 60meg/sec you would get from a dedicated NAS storage system but i wouldnt call the transfer speeds I get painfully slow.

5GB is the online storage, you can opt not to use that..

You only need one machine on at a time, when the other comes online the most up to date file will be copied to the other machines.
