Home network

ok cool, so is the one I linked to a good choice then?
I dont want to spend more than I need to but I dont wont to get one that wont work either.

If you want to save money then you could grab two 8 ports for less - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-172-DL&groupid=46&catid=2316

or alternatively if you want a single unit but do not need the management aspects of the switch (not many do in a home environment) then either of these would be just as good

The SG1016D can be had for under £60 if you want it to.

ok, what are the benefits of a managed switch over a non managed switch?

Unfortunatly I dont know loads about networking so I am just trying to muddle through. Would any of them be ok to attach a NAS box to and be able to access it from any point?

Thanks for this mate.

Managed switches give you different features depending on the type of management. They can allow you to set VLANs, monitor ports, turn ports on and off etc etc.

For what you want an unmanaged will be perfectly fine. So grab the cheapest gigabit one that has enough ports.

I think you'll find the TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch is the cheapest you can find, around £18 online.

Something I heard today, as I'm making my whole network Gigabit too, is that you need to make sure your switch has Jumbo Frame support if it's going to be used for a NAS.

Can anyone confirm the TP-Link has Jumbo Frame support?

get the first one you linked to,in the future if you want to set up 'separate' networks for different people to use you'll be able to do that with it's managed functions.

I wish I'd used managed switches here now but too late.
