home networking dilemma

hey guys,

i've left and gone to uni and all my parents seem to have done is upgrade everything with the food money they're saving lol.

anyways they have a home networking dilemma.

currently have a ADSL router (w/ 4 ports)

1x Printer
1x PC
1x Laptop
1x Wireless Access Point

this was fine but now we've got a 360 & a HTPC to add to that plus we need a better wireless access point as the one we've got was given to us by family friend after he upgraded his. (its a buffalo air station and the range is about 2m on a bad day and other times it'll be fine)

anyways. what i'm getting at is a solution to this.

i've drawn up some plans but being no good with anything artistic i avoided paint and used a good old piece of paper (see below what i'm trying to get across).

the LT (laptop that the blue cable runs to will soon be a PC as that is on its way out and doesn't even have wireless built in.

also we have 1 wireless laptop so that is what the WL (wireless access point) is for.

the Red cables will be external and have not been drilled/laid yet but will go downstairs and into the living room.

the bright blue bit is my brother just manually changing the cable from his 360 and PC as dad refuses to pull any more carpets/floor boards up. this is partly why the two cables (red) that we don't have will be going outside.

the normal blue are cables we've already got laid down

now the hub may or may not work. its very old and its been with us for about 6 years since the move before last lol. it is indeed a SMC Barricade but no longer use it as we ran a Cable modem into and now my parents are in a ADSL area so had to get the router we currently have.

i do remember having problems with it though and sharing files was a real pain in the arse so the idea of having the PCs running from it not being able to send stuff to the HTPC would then be a problem. i'll set up a temp config tomorrow to see if it works but if not what would be the best setup?

would it be worth buying a Wireless router and then running a 8 port switch from that for everything to connect to?

my dad says hes very tight for money after x-mas and so nothing can be bought for a little while but just need to get an idea for him what he might have to buy as i'm going back to uni at the weekend.

thanks guys.

i think that a "NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch" would be a good switch to go for after reading up on some switches but of course i may not need that.

cheers.

I have a gigabit switch, which does the job perfectly and I have 2 runs x 2 going to 3 locations in the house to a central switch. Since you already have cables laid it would be a good idea to expand on the cabling.

Instead of two red cables, why not have one (or run two and only terminate one if you want to cover yourself against the cable going bad), and connect that to a switch which is then connected to the HTPC and 360?
Same applies for the dark/light blue cables for the PC and 360?

Yeh I agree, double run incase things go wrong with the cable (not likely but still possible). This is why I have 2 runs.
