Im having some issues setting up suitable file sharing at home.

Ill try and make as much sense as i can......

I have 4 Systems on my network:

1: PC XP Pro SP2

2: Laptop Vista HP

3: Laptop Vista HB

4: PC XP Home

What id like to do is have folders shared only between 1 & 2 (most folders being on 1).

I have tried setting up a workgroup between 1 & 2 but 3 still sees and has access to files.

I am using a Netgear DG834N. I also have a spare DG834G knocking about (could i set up 2 diff networks?).

Contrary to how this post makes me sound, im usualy pretty clued up when it comes to PCs but this has baffled me....

Could i just block ports for file & printer sharing on the router to the 2 IPs of the PCs i want restricted ?

Thanks in advance.....

OMG ITS MIDNIGHT! IVE BEEN AT IT FOR HOURS!

Cant you just explicitly set the permissions of the top level folder to only allow one username to access them (use different usernames on each system) and then add everyone but tick the deny boxes?

Thats what i thought but there seems to be no permissions i can set anywhere ? ? ? (Poss because i have corp edition of XP Pro from Uni? fully legit b4 the bashing starts :P)

Can i run 2 routers of 1 Internet connection and create 2 seperate/private networks?

You need to go into the folder and go to Tools >Folder options >Click on the View Tab and scroll to the bottom. Then take the tick out of use simple file sharing.

Yes and no to the two routers question. I suppose you could use a cable router plugged into the ethernet port of the adsl router, but this is overcomplicating things.

Block ports 135-139 and 445, either on machine 3 or for machine 3's IP on the other machines?
If you've got a managed switch, you could do it there.
