Hi, ok I posted a long time ago about moving into a house with some flatmates at Uni and I had an idea about setting up a network but after thinking about it I need advice.

Basically, 4 of us moving into a house in July, we'll be getting ADSL2+ so I will have :

Draytek Vigor 2800 or the standard box the ISP will send out.

Now 2 of us, < 15m from the location of the master socket will require 3 connection points for our PC's + Macs, the other two rooms will only need 1 or 2 and can be wireless + wired mixed.

We also want a fast network (gigabit?) for our file server.

So I was wondering what the best setup would be?

How would I provide 3 connections in each room? should I just lay one cable to each room, then if you need more connection get a 4 port gigabit switch in the room?

I would also have to go Master Phone Socket --> Router --> Gigabit switch --> Cat5e --> Gigabit Switch

would that work?

Very confused on what I should do :)

Well if you got time wire it up yourself. It'll work better in your position in the long term too.
Just get a few Cat5e wires. A few sockets. Put the sockets where you want them in each room. Bring them all back to a patch panel. Connect it through to a router and switch. And you should be set to go. :)
