hi guys hope you can help with my question..

I have a Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps that is connected to 2 pcs at home, however this is very slow for transferring files such as films etc between the pcs.

So i would like to somehow connect the 2 pc's at the fastest possible speed to transfer media between them.

Can anyone tell me how I do this please, do I need to but a 1gb switch and plug the cable modem into it and then plug the 2 pc's into it too?

Thanks

Ferret

If the Router has Ethernet Ports on the back, you could connect the PCs to it's Ethernet Ports. Providing they are able to negotiate 100 MBPS, there should be a substantial increase.

Otherwise, purchase a 1 GB switch and connect the uplink port to the Router and your PCs to the switch.

How are they currently transferring files? wires or wireless.

1Gb switch/hub wont be much use without gigabit nics in the pcs.

Cheers guys I am transferring files via cables via the router (which is also a hub).

It just seems very slow, a DVD copied across can take 30 minutes or so...is this correct?

Cheers Ferret

If I remember correctly...

100Mb/s = 12.5MB/s (real world performance more likely to be 8MB/s)

Then work out the approximate time it should be taking.

i think your network is running at 10Mb/s from my bad arithmetic skills.

yup, running Tomato firmware on it, but for ethernet, makes no difference there..

what operating systems are you running..??

unpatched vista + bad network card drivers can give you really poor networking, like 200kb/s speeds...

if you bought a 5 port gigabit switch, you could just plug that into the WRT54GL (any of the main ports) and it'd work at gigabit speeds (assuming both machines have gigabit cards)

that's up to 125Mb/s transfer speeed ( 10x your current)
