can anyone recommend a decent Ethernet switch , soon to get keys to our bungalow and we are having cat6 in our main rooms so if anyone's got any recommendations that would be great im thinking 24 ports and be able to maximize virgin medias top internet package

How much you looking to spend? New or Used?

Depending on budget I would be looking at Cisco 2960s. Can be had fairly cheap on eBay.

I assume you mean non-managed, since it's a home network.

Any fanless 24 port gigabit switch will do, they're practically all the same..

I quite like the TRENDnet switches.

TEG-S24g

Nice low power usage.

Thanks for the replies the trednet is more in my price range so I will have a read about them , any recommendations for cat 6 cable and where to buy it from ?

The NETGEAR GS324 seems to be available for a good price and the TP-LINK TL-SG1024D is even cheaper.

Both more than capable home switches.

i dont think im going to need a patch panel but correct me if im wrong , are patch panels basically for more flexibility with cables ?

Yea, simply put, they stay static to the wall so less chance of damage and easier to track once you have them labelled.
I might have a 24 port gigabit Netgear going spare very soon if you do go on to post a wanted thread.
