I'm in the process (and by process I mean the thinking process) of building a machine for the family to use. We have a macbook which is ok for day to day but really, having something quick with a large monitor will be great as we do a lot of image editing. I toyed with connecting the mac to a monitor, but to be honest OSX hasnt really got any better over the years in my view and I would rather have something that could be on all the time to allow for the following use cases:

  • Web browsing
  • Image Editing
  • Video Editing
  • Media storage and serving around the home
  • Perhaps some light Gaming
I've been pulling together parts for a few weeks as and when I spot a good deal that is compatible with the bits I already have, along with some items I have left over from previous tech items. I have amassed:

  • 1 x 1TB HDD
  • 1 x 2TB HDD
  • 1 x 480GB SSD
  • 1 x 1TB 2.5inch HDD
  • 1 x Thermaltake V31 case
  • 1 x EVGA 750W Gold PSU
  • 1 x Radeon RX460 2GB (from old pc)

I've been toying with 2 builds actually. 1 home server, low powered and using some of the HDD I have, and one machine for the family. I need to decide on various components but looking to use Ryzen as my main rig and then perhaps a pentium for the media server.

I've asked on various threads on here and people have been very helpful so we will see where I land on this one - will report back soon.
