Hi people not sure which section this goes in

Do you have to go with BT initially for a landline?

I have aline already in the house but no contract with any company to provide a landline telephone service.

Is BT my only option. apart from cable...

Thanks, much appreciated.

I think so, but you don't have to go direct to BT. As I understand it, with the exception of cable suppliers, the "local loop" (i.e. home to exchange) will be BT regardess of who sends you your bill. The others are merely resellers.

Think Bulldog offer something...not sure...as I am with BT.

Whatever you do, don't use Bulldog. My g/f was gonna use them for her broadband at her uni house, but after looking into it for her I found so many horror stories it isn't even worth considering.

LLU telcos use their own equipment, as far as I can make out.

I would stick with BT though - all of the engineers are still BT.

I'll take your word for it, Borris. I didn't think that was the case, but I could easily be mistaken. I thought they used their own gear in the exchange, but not between exchange and home.

It's very hit and miss. I've had 8mbit for over 6 months now and regularly get download speeds of 850KB/s. :)

LOL yep, that sounds just about spot on!

With all providers except cable the 'last mile' as its called will still be BT, but from the exchange it can either go via a company that has it own equipment in the exchange (LLU) or be carried on BT's network to another provider, here there are a number of options you can do CPS (Carrier pre-select) which measn all your calls are charged by a different provider but you line rental is still paid to BT, or you can do WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) which is where you are billed only by one comapny that includes both calls and line rental. Companies like Talk Talk do CPS so you still pay your line rental to BT but call are paid to Talk Talk.

I hope that sort of helps a bit :)

Ah - I see what you're getting at, and that you are probably correct - Own kit at the exchange, existing (BT) kit between exchange and house.

Depending on where you go though, you can still have BT engineers come out to fix things.
I know with TalkTalk if you sign up to that, any faults and you call TalkTalk or call out the BT engineers as the line is still BT's, just rented by TalkTalk.

I expect it's a similar story with the Post Office too.

Well I'm glad you haven't had any troubles mate, as you say I guess it's very hit and miss. The stuff I read about them was really terrible, but I hope you continue to get good service!

Just spoke to TalkTalk and they said they work of an Active BT Line so basically you need to have a phone number before you can use us.

Looks like BT only then

What about Telewest Broadband (if its in you area that is)

I've had the phoneline and broadband for 7-8 years now and I've had no probs
