Looking for some advice. I'm in the process of moving my rooms about, I will be moving my PC to a different room along with my Xbox 360. My Modem will be staying in the room my PC is currently in and as it isn't too far I was just going to stick an ethernet cable under the carpet to plug into my PC/Xbox, until someone at work mentioned home plugs.

I also have a PS3 which is downstairs in my conservatory and aoment is unable to connect to my modem. I'm looking for the best and most efficient way of connecting all 3 devices at a decent price. I've seen some home plugs on this site for £64.99 and paying that wouldn't be an issue so something around that price point or cheaper if possible.

Thanks.

If the distance isn't an issue, get a cheap gigabit switch(around 20 quid from OCUK) and run your CAT6 leads.

Homeplugs I class as a last resort, they are much more susceptible to interference, slower speeds, higher latency, and the higher price..

The switch/cable route will be ultimately cheaper, faster, more reliable, but you have the downside of having to run cable, weigh it up with whatever is best for you.

How new is the house? If its new there shouldn't be any issues, I use home plug for my ps4 and get no performance issues.

Basically down to how good the wiring in the house is. I recommend them. Better than running cables around house.

No idea exactly but it isn't a new build, we've been here near 20 years.

Running cables to the PC and Xbox isn't the big issue, the problem really is the PS3, i'd have to run a cable downstairs, through the living room, dining room and then across the conservatory.

See if any of your mates has a home plug and borrow it to test. I think you should be fine using it for the ps3

I live in a 1961 built house and use a set of homeplugs to feed our living room LG plasma for plex and stuff. I have no issues streaming HD content. I tested the speed and it was about 5-6 meg and was concerned a bit by this but it's been faultless so far.

I stream HD Content on my 200Mb homeplugs (some even have wifi built in). House is over 3 floors, 1940s council house and to be honest I doubt it's been rewired in many, many years.

Cat 6 is great but in many cases it's fairly impracticable to run so wifi or homeplugs works out fine.

I've got three TP-Link ones, they're great. Obviously if maximum performance is your concern then they won't match CAT6 cable, but for any other time they're brilliant and far more reliable than wi-fi. I have one at my router with my NAS attached, one for my PC and another connected to a switch which serves my TV, Sky box and games consoles.

you don't need cat6 cable for anything just run cat5 cable. :D

homeplugs are great I have one in my extension (on same ring as router) and it works great.

Also bought a wifi extender homeplug again with great sucess it allows me to stream bluray quality Mp4 to my apple tv via air server on my phone with no buffering or stops.

How good is that?

You do need cat6(or cat5E) if you plan on using a Gigabit switch, otherwise you can and most probably will experience interference and the switch might automatically default to 100BASE-T resulting in inconsistent speeds, especially over long distances.

The price increase is marginal and you're setting yourself up to have to replace the cable in the future if/when 10GE becomes more widespread.

Thanks very much. Much appreciated. I'm fairly new to all of this so am I right in thinking i'd need two sets of home plugs? 1 to go into the router, 1 for my pc, 1 for my xbox and 1 for the PS3?

I have heard that if downstairs and upstairs are on different electric rings it may cause problems?

Are there any you'd recommend?

Thanks

I live in a 1910 house, was wired upstairs in late 80's - no problem whatsoever with Homeplugs. Router sync speed is currently 4.4, downloading from origin at 4.7(?!) - ping in game is around 15-20 so no problems there at all. You will need one for each device, including the router unless they now offer them with 2 outputs but I wouldn't know!
