Moving from a 2 bed in Surrey to (hopefully if sale proceeds ok) a house in Worcestershire, so roughly 110 miles.

On doing some googling, I find plenty of pages telling me the rough costs of removals, similar to this which is for a 3 bed including packing services and materials, showing around 1,200.

We've had 2 quotes back so far for our 2 bed (admittedly quite a full 2 bed, but a 2 bed nonetheless - no extraordinary furniture or garden items or anything like that), one 2200 +VAT, the other 4000 something.

Waiting to hear back from 2 other companies, but they need to do video tours of your house to do a quote.

Am I being penalised for being in Surrey? Unlucky with picking one expensive company and one absolute gouger? Or is the market rate well above what that website says, and what seems sensible to me?

Would be great if anyone who has moved from a 2 or 3 (or even 4 or 5 just for reference) bed recently over a distance could share rough costs.

We moved a 2 bed flat's worth of stuff, so probably not as much as you, but still needed a decent size van, beds, furniture, sofa etc., no white goods and not much garden stuff though, about 15 minutes down the road. The guys did the whole thing in about 3-4 hours, including dismantling and rebuilding beds, and charged about 550 inc VAT. This is the south west though.

Would all your stuff fit into a Luton Van? Search for a man and a van service and focus on ones with larger vans who offer a removal service. They’ll be looking at charging you around £600 but you’ll need to pack everything yourself.

I will be doing this in the next few years...my plan is to sell all my stuff and start again.

Most is now junk anyway.

Have a good honest clear out will save you some cash moving

We had a 2 bed flat moved from Manchester to London, about 230 miles or so, took them two Lutons and was about £1400. That was two days, one day packing and dismantling, and then loaded into van morning of next day and driven down unpacked re-assembled the same day (they didn't finish until 2am...but they were a man down as one of the three man crew didn't turn up on the second day)

Sounds excessive

We last moved about 3.5 years ago moving a large 4 bed house (with study and dining room), loft and double garage. We only moved about 10 miles but the 4 (from memory) man crew came one day packed everything for us, loaded the van (whole day) took it all away to overnight storage then back to the new house the following day and 3 man crew unloaded on next to no time. That was c£2k in Cheshire

We moved from a two bed flat in Epsom about 5 miles to a 4 bed detached.

no white goods but beds and furniture and boxes, two vans and beds dismantled and reassembled.

£1000 all in.

Getting quotes ourself at the mo

Moving from a 4 bed to a 3 bed about 15 miles away, we're up north

First quote is £1,200.00. Other firms are wanting to do a phone/video tour of property before they'll quote

Mrs is a panicker and she wants the removal men, otherwise i'd have gone down van rental. Then again, with the stamp duty saving removal men is a lot less hassle

I moved a 3 bedroom house worth of stuff in a Luton van. I had sold 2x bedside tables, a chest of draws and my very small dining table though. It cost me about £90 for the day. If one van wont be enough for whatever reason, hire 2!

We did the first house move from rented to owned home ourselves in a hired Luton.

Suffice to say, both subsequent moves involved paying someone to do it. Much easier and less stressful. This is especially true when doing an move out/move in on a single day as part of a chain.

Quotes vary significantly by area and how busy the market is, so can't offer too much insight into the cost aspect.

Moved recently, but only local - 3 bed to a 4 bed. We did all the packing, but the removal firm did all loading and unloading. Turned up in an absolutely massive truck.

Cost was around £750, so if we include the additional travelling time for yours (say 4-5 hours round trip?), Maybe you could double what I paid so around £1500 sounds about right?

I'm in the Northwest, so probably cheaper up here, so maybe add another £300 quid.

So my guess is around £1800 would be about ballpark?

Try getting a quote from someone near your destination. You’ll have to pack it all but they’ll load and unload.

You’ll save a load of cash by doing the packing yourself.

The price probally reflects its 2 days work and the best part of a 3 hour drive there and back in a lorry and 2/3/4 people’s time.

Why are people recommending van hire? It’s a 220 mile round trip and you can’t fit a house in a Luton. This is the definition of a job for removals. The last time we moved we brimmed 4 Luton’s and had a small crew cabbed van assisting, that was a 3 bed plus garage but only two peoples things.

Packing on a 3 bed house when we moved around 18 months ago cost £150, this was in Surrey (expensive) and meant the insurance on anything being broken was much better as they'd packed it all (which was handy, as they broke a TV). They arrived the day before, took apart the cot, bed and a large wardrobe. Packed everything in boxes using bubble wrap, and put the bed, cot and wardrobe together at the new property.

Best £150 I've ever spent.

Yeah weirdly the packing cost seems to come quite cheap on top. Perhaps the way they do it is give you a big cost for the removals but a small 'additional' for packing to try and entice you. I'd jump at the chance of 150quid for packing if we could get it on top of a decent quote.

Definitely won't be driving myself, like born2sk8 says I think we'll be lucky to fit into a Luton and I don't fancy driving a Luton 200 miles let alone anything bigger.

Just trying to see if it's possible to get a sensible quote from a bona fide removals company before going man and van, will keep searching for quotes.
