Hi all,

I'm looking to spec a hardware solution to run a vmware workstation set-up. I've searched the forums and the recommendations that come back are older and maybe a little out of date.

I have another PC that will handle my everyday computing needs - this rig will be entirely for running an internal network. My hardware requirements are:

4 core or 2 x dual-core processors (or more...)
Minimum of 8gb ram (possibly 16gb)
100gb for Windows 7 64-bit and Workstation 7 application
500gb for VM storage
400gb for ESXi storage
1gb NIC

Essentially, I want to run a private LAN within Workstation for the following VMs:
1 x 2GB Win2K8R2-64 - DC, DNS, DHCP, Windows Update (using a 10.0.0.0/24 network)
1 x 2GB Win2k8R2-64 - vCenter 4.1
2 x 4GB ESXi 4.1 hosts, configured in vCenter as 2 datacenters for vMotion etc)
1 x 1GB OpenFiler appliance for iSCSI target for ESXi VMs (using 400gb partition)
1 x 1GB Vyatta Router as gateway (on 10.0.0.1) and firewall onto home LAN, bridging the private LAN and the physical NIC

Essentially I want something that has good IOPS so there is as little storage contention as possible. I can use the VMware Tools drivers in the VMs to do memory overcommitment, balooning and page sharing, so no problems there as far as memory is concerned. There will only be minimal VMs configured on the ESXi boxes at any one time.

What I'd like is people's thoughts on hardware to run this set-up. Currently it's running on an HP ProBook laptop, but I want to move it off to a dedicated machine.

Any thoughts on what I should be looking at to run all this?
Cheers.

You got all that running on a Pro Book? LOL Bet it's slow.... Spec dependant mind you.

I Have a Pro Book and it's slow when I run my VMware test servers on it for my Job....
Found a SSD helps.... Any How.

What you need is a nice HP ML350 G6
Get the base model
HP ProLiant ML350 G6
E5520 1P 6GB-R
P410i/256 750W RPS
Tower Server
HP P/N:487930-001

It comes with a Nice P410i Raid controller whack SATA disks running 5x 320Gb Drives in RAID 5 for the lot will give you Total of 1.2Tb well about 1.1Tb usable, Partition this off for ESXi & ya VM Storage etc then just VM each server & ya Windows 7 PC.

This Model comes with the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5520 2.26 GHz
Quad Core so only need one (As the Server can take 2 CPUs)
6GB (3 x 2GB) of RAM plenty of slots free to up it to 14Gb or 16Gb
Also Dual Port Gigabit NIC.....

Check out these quick specs
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13241_na/13241_na.pdf

I use these servers all the time in my VM installs where I work.

Just recently put one in a company that run 3 VM Servers at once on one of these ML350 G6's no problem

1x DC, Exchange, DNS, DHCP etc.... on SBS 2008 64Bit
1x Terminal Server on 2003 32Bit
1x SQL Server 2003 32Bit

Plus theres plenty of room for upgrades later down the line.......

I'd Rather go for a server like this with Warranty & Support than spec up parts build it from scratch etc......

If the ML350 G6 is too heavy on the coin then the cheaper ML150 G7 still packs a good spec etc.....

hope this helps...... any questions let me know

Hi there,

Many thanks for the reply - I'll look into that. In the meantime I've inherited today a Dell T100 server. It has 1 x dual core processor but only 2gb ram. Are there any upgrade options or am I really looking for a new box?

Cheers.
Jeremy.

Hi I dont deal with Dells as much as HP kit but the T100 is ok a good starting server, Similar to the HP ML150 G4 & G5

The max memory the T100 can take is 8Gb.... so it is do able.... Depends on what RAID controller you have and how many disks, but you can always add more....
I suppose if it turns out to be slugish on this you could always get a new server and drop your VM's on it or even split the load using the T100 and another Server?
T100 info here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/t100_spec_pt.pdf

Maybe even worth looking into HyperV instead of VMWare, Just because HyperV tends tobe less demanding on hardware, I choose it for customers who need to save money on hardware so they can get lower spec (Cheaper) servers but get the same sort outcome.

(Tomorrow I'm building 8x HP DL380 G7 Rack Mount Servers fully loaded with CPU's, RAM & Disks the works....... a nice 160k order (Licences for all O/S Cals & Software alone is 30k of that lol) all for some company in the Midlands being fully installed and go live deadline in 2 weeks time. A big Job for me and some serious thinking needed)

Let us know if you need any more help/advise and wish us luck for tomorrow
