We have not used the antenna on our roof since buying our house many years ago as we always had Virgin(NTL) cable TV. However, we are considering using free view now but after trying the socket in the living room for what I believe is an old co-ax cable, I couldn't get any signal.

Is there any way to test if this socket is working or if indeed the antenna is working? Is it worth spending £10 on a new co-ax cable to try it?

£10 for a coax cable ?

That'll be one of those "special" gold plated ones. ;)

I assume you are talking about the cable that you plug into the socket and connect to your TV.

Can you see your aerial, and if so, does it look OK (is it upright/pointing in the same direction as your neighbours/hasn't got bits missing) ?
