Hi all,

Could anybody help me out in finding a home router which will enable me to limit the upload and download rate of each computer connected to it?

Thanks!

Owen,

Thanks.

Also, off the top of my head, there are some all in one bandwidth throttling solutions for ADSL - the Thomson Speedtouch 6xx series, e.g. 608WL, the Billion 740x series and Drayteks.

Thanks for the answer :).

I have been looking at the FAQ page for tomato and I am very interested in the QOS rules that you can setup.

However, I did not see any mention of being able to set a download/upload speed cap per mac address, which is what I was originally looking for.

Do you know if tomato supports this?

The stock Tomato doesn't support bandwidth control by default - only QoS as you have already seen. You can add a script to the stock Tomato firmware that will give you some bandwidth control, but I'd recommend looking at Victek's version in the link I gave in the previous post. Basically this is an offshoot of the standard Tomato firmware and there is an additional GUI front end that allows you to control the bandwidth etc.

It's important to clear the nv-ram after installing any Tomato firmware

Administration->Configuration->Restore Default Configuration->Erase all data in NVRAM memory(thorough)->OK

After looking over the links provided I have put in my order at ocuk for a wrt54gl.

Thanks to all!

(looking forward to setting up some QOS and bandwidth rules to prioritise my traffic over my housemates, woot).

Hmm, interesting. Does the VicTek firmware also have bandwidth scheduling as well as throttling. So I can for example limit upload traffic to 20KB/s between 7pm and 8 pm?

i'll check tonight
you can ban mac addresses completely between certain times, will check the throttling screen and post a shot of it for you :)

Excellent, if you would be so kind. I really am in need of something as it's really doing my head if I go over my VM limits and end up getting capped.

Here is a screenshot from the VicTek Tomato firmware bandwidth limiting page.

There are no options built into that page to allow you to change times that the limits are in place.

However, Tomato has a built in sceduler which can run CRON jobs using the cru command (set to tun at specific dates/times). I am not sure if this could be used to change the bandwidth limit rules, but it may prove useful looking into it.

Hope this help,

Owen

Thanks for that gentleman. I already use the scheduling in Utorrent which is great but I need something just like that for other programs like Rapidshare and Megaupload.
