Hi All,

Looking to get a security system for my home but rather clueless of who to go with. My first port of call was looking at ADT but I am sure others are out there which I can compare against. I am looking for an alarm system and cameras and want the alarm to be a notifaction system rather than just a noise (which no one responds to).

Whether this helps the advice but I already have Ring Doorbell and would be looking at either Hive or Nest in the future.

Any recommendations from anyone? And any experience with price range and if any further monthly payment is needed as standard (as I hear ADT is mandatory to have a service package).

I'd personally go with a security camera system rather than alarm.

Simple (but slightly ongoing expensive solutions):
  • Nest
  • Canary
  • Netgear Arlo
These will all record and alert you to movement. Can be inside or outside the house.

Alternative is to go with PoE cameras. Take a bit more initial setup but generally better quality and cheaper long term.

I can only chip in on the PoE camera side but with them installed you have the option of motion/alerts but more importantly open the App on your phone and you can instantly see a feed from all your cameras. The internet based model uses a network of P2P (Peer 2 Peer) servers that registers the cameras and then only makes a P2P connection between you and the camera so long as you have the unique UID of each camera. The camera only streams data when you request/monitor it.

Of course you can also setup the cameras to record continually to an SD card, NAS, Cloud or dedicated NVR.

Look at the range of Reolink cameras on Amazon for a decent brand with good support or a complete bundle of internal/external cameras with dedicated NVR.

Yeah most people will just ignore an alarm but then you need to pay stupid money for a monitored one. You can buy a gadget which you plug a cheap PAYG sim into and then it will text you and 2 other numbers when the alarm is triggered. Rather than paying monthly/yearly for a monitored service.

Yale do a really good alarm system with cameras built in. So if someone breaks in and triggers the alarm. The camera will automatically take pictures and send them to you. It's also wireless too so you can install it yourself simply.

For CCTV there is nothing stopping the thief from stealing the NVR or even disconnecting the cameras by cutting the wire running to them. Also when you see CCTV people usually think, he has something worth stealing or at least worth protecting. So you would be more sophisticated in your approach than a smash and grab.

Nest has stupidly high fees and the cameras ain't cheap either but it's probably the best and simplest solution if you can afford it.

Depends how your installer does the cabling, all of our external CCTV cameras have the cables ran in the cavity, only way you would disable them is actually smashing the camera itself. I'd recommend getting a Hikvision DVR then some poe cameras, if you want line detection and other features it's worth spending a little more now than have to rip the system out later.

Monitored alarms are a bit of a waste, few people respond, police ring up to see if there is really a problem. AFT have asked me in the past to check next door before calling the police!
Depends where you live of course but neighbourhood watch and a decent cctv to deter is probably better.
Andi.

I considered ADT for all of 2 minutes until I read their trustpilot reviews.

I also considered Verisure but they wanted £48 a month on a three year contract. No thanks.

In the end, we went with a local independent specialist who installed a wireless system to our specs and it has remote monitoring (text/call/app) to let us know if the alarm gets activated.

Add into the mix some CCTV, MilaProsecure handles and some visual deterrents I'm not sure what more we can do.

Sounds like just what I’m after, struggling to find anything Leicester based which doesn’t need a monthly contracted payment.

Which alarm system did you go for in the end, that has text/app etc ?

Build up a relationship with your neighbours if you can.

We have a new family move in opposite us at about he same time we moved in. Next door but one to them (who were out at the hospital with her terminal husband who then died when she was called back to the house by the police) Them and another house got done over at the SAME time. We all ignored the alarm noise.

Now we have all been introduced to each other properly. We now look out for each other we all have each others mobile numbers and if an alarm sounds we seem to all turn up at the same time to have a quick look and make sure its a false alarm.

I am looking at updating my old alarm system and have been looking into some of the ones on the market.

The Pyronix Enforcer seems to be a good, expandable system that is sued by many professional installers.

It supports both wired and wireless modules as well as the ability to connect CCTV cameras to it. It is also controllable via an app and can alert you when you are away of any intrusions. I think there is an annual subscription after the first year of £36 for access to the Pyronix Cloud to enable the app's functions
