Im not really 100% sure if this belongs here but here goes :P

Ive been wanting to build a home server for a while now to store all my work etc, howerver i use a mac for design/photo work and a PC for 3d moddeling/gaming etc.
My idea is to have a central server that both my mac and PC can see at the same time but the problem is that i have no idea if thats possible since one is running windows and the other OS X.

So my questions to you lot are, is it possible at all and if so what operating system do i need/what are my options.

Hope you can help :)

If you're just looking for simple storage options then (I believe) you could just use FreeNAS... www.freenas.org

I'm pretty sure that it's compatible with the Mac, and it'll definitely work with the Windows box.

Yep, it's actually quite easy. The Windows file sharing protocol was long ago reverse engineered and implemented as free software in the form of Samba. OS X includes Samba by default and is able to access and host Samba shares. Linux has the same capability.
