Afternoon nearly,

ive currently got an old Akasa Zen case with my old pc parts in acting as a home server. Ive just put 2x 1GB Samsung F1s and a new WD 2gb caviar Green in it. this is also with the OS drive for a total of 4 HDDs.

the 2 Samsung drives appear to be spinning ever so slightly out of phase with each other, and this is producing an incrediby annoying rythmical vibration. Its not too bad when i am in the room, however when i am in my bedroom below my office, I am struggling to get to sleep listening to the 'stepping' of the noise.

I know I have crammed a lot of kit into this old case and am after something that will eliviate me of this problem and allow me to sleep at night!

help please :)

Why don't you just set the hard drives to power down after being idle for a while. Even if you were using the system for something, all the drives will remain powered down except the os drive, unless a request is made for some data of one of the others, then it will spin up.

If you can hear this noise through the floor, it must be transmitting those vibrations straight through it. So you could also look at what the case is sitting on. The last solution, and the expensive one, is a new case with vibration damping for hard drives and sound deadening etc. I actually use a Fractal Define R2 for my server, it's extremely quiet. But this is a last ditch fix really, I think you can sort it without spending any money.

Fractal R3 is the go to server case. As it's so quiet.

As above, maybe get like some corkboard or something to rest the PC on. Should hopefully reduce vibrations through the house.
