Hello all,

I have a working server at home with the following specs:
i3 CPU
4GB Ram
4x 2TB HDD

I currently run windows 7 however i was curious about using windows 2012 server as this would allow me more options. I need the system to run 3x CCTV cameras and also be a media player for HD media plus i need to remote login.

Can windows server 2012 do this or can windows 8?
Is this spec enough to do all 3 tasks.

Im new to the setup of servers. How secure would it be, do i need to purchase a firewall?

Hi there,

It depends exactly which "services" you want your server to serve, if that makes sense. If you don't need AD DS, DHCP, DNS or RAS then server 2012 may not be for you if you're planning on buying it. If you are, I would say go for essentials 2012 rather than standard.

Are you planning of using any of the services at all? Have you used a server OS before?

As for the CCTV, what software do you have in mind? I would suggest iSpy - http://www.ispyconnect.com/ - I use this at home, works great, apps for smartphone are very good also.

Firewall, a firewall is better than no firewall. Of course there is one built into the OS in either windows 8 or 2012, but having extra security is always a better contingency. Do you have any thoughts on what you wish to use?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The Server needs to run a media player, Arcsoft 2013 and be able to function as a media centre.

The software for the CCTV is Blue Iris, i have purchased this and will check if its compatabl with Server 2012 Essentials.

As for services i ideally want to remote login to the Server. I also want to backup my phones, and other house PC's
I need to be able to login to the Server.

I have no experience with AD DS, DHCP, DNS or RAS. Can you breifly explain what they would enable me to do.

Thanks again for your advice.
