I'm currently considering my options as to building a home server. I have decided on the software, OS etc. I will be using and feel comfortable with doing that. However, now I just need the actual hardware.

I have been offered a Del PowerEdge 650 server, which is an old rack mounted jobby. I, obviously, wont be running it in a rack - does that matter? What kind of HDD's do they accept?

Would I be better off just buying a cheap old desktop PC and using that?

The only reason I even considered a proper server build, in addition to the cheap price, was the assumption that it would be better built to be running for extremely long periods of time without over heating etc.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be great, thanks. Also, please note I am trying to do this on a very limited budget of around £100 - Which, afaik, is still entirely possible.

i would build a cheap machine matey,

The server will do happy running 24/7 but so would a cheaper machine. Also the server will probably be a bit heavy on the juice, ie hit the electric bill. And also probably be quite noisey.
