Hi All,

I'm currently using a Synology 107e with a 1Tb Drive as my file server to allow me to access my DVD's, photos and some files to my main PC and to the HTPC I've got in the living room for the main LCD.

I have though a spare PC that I was about to break up (C2D 6600, 4gb Ram, 3 HD's, 8800GTS 640mb), using some of it for another HTPC for the Bedroom and then sell the rest, what I'm thinking of though is as I've got about 2Tb of drive storage (including the NAS Tb) would I be better using the left over bits to create a server to share my DVD's etc out around the house rather than the NAS box.

Question : - Am I better going down the home server path or am I better staying with the NAS box?

If a server is the better option I've been looking at Windows Home Server, which has some good and bad reviews, but also was wondering what other options I had, are there any unix options for running a home server.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Taff

Windows home server is pretty amazing for this, unix is also an option but much more hassle getting it working just a simply :)

I've got a WHS as a media/backup/download/apache server. Basically it does everything, and i RDP in if there are any niggles, otherwise i just use the web front ends to the download clients i use, its as simple as, i couldn't do without it now days...
