Hiya,

so got me old server box built, donwloaded the latest freenas, samba works but can't get fuppes working with avi for my ps3. FTP also refuses to work saying "error code 1", tried the old "defaultaddress 192.168.0.7" in parameters trick doesn't work like it did in the version before.

I'm getting so frustrated with trying to setup a linux box, ubuntu 9.04 desktop won't work headless either, it gets graphical faults and stops half way through boot, this stops the easy to install route dead in its tracks :/

Debian - seems like a good choice, but I have never understood there website and wouldn't even know where to start to look for guides...

Arch linux _ I like arch but i cba to faff around for a week to get it installed :p

seems my only option is to whack an XP install on it and forget about and move on with life :p

Yes I'm ranting, i'm tired and frustrated.... I jst don't have enough faith in linux or rather my ability not to **** my server up and destroy data.

At least XP is easy to setup, but then I don't wanna give in and admitt defeat and use XP.

Helps!!!!

Try OpenSUSE - I'm very much a linux n00b and it's been very good to me, very easy to setup and configure with YaST.

yeh used suse years ago, i may give it another look on my day off, playing with debian in virtual box atm...

just really tired, probably should go to bed before i think about dusting down my XP disk lol

ty 4 the suggestion

debian is really easy!

just download and install the net install: http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

then install it and then install the stuff you need.

apt-get install <package name>

openssh
samba
vsftpd
apache
squid
rtorrent
nano (or your favourite text editor, I like vim)

then edit the config in /etc/ for each app

search for a package apt-cache search
docs are either command --help or man

e.g. man nano

to update apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

You'll need ssh so you can then ssh in from your win box using putty for remote admin.

if you need guides literally in google do e.g. apache setup debian and you'll find about 10,000

If you're a student, grab yourself a copy of windows server 2008, microsoft is giving it away free to students. I've got a copy of it running my home server.

Have a look here: https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx

im going to do a pgce at uni of east anglia in september!! I guess that counts?

Im fiddling with debian over virtualbox, I'm gonna wrestle with debian this week, if i fail i'll have to go XP :)

Whats the best upnp system for streaming to ps3? Mediatomb? is it CLI only proof?

As long as you have an Athens account or any other method they use to verify eligability.

On the dreamspark website, it will have a list of the eligable Universities and Colleges.

debian is really easy!

I think your right, everything is installing so easily on the debian netinstall!!!

I may have hope yet!!

I assume debian will pickup my data drive alright? or will I manually have to add it to fdisk? (This may cause me tears lol)

EDIT: WoW debian seems to be the answer, got mediatomb daemon working hassle free on virtual box!!!, ftp, openssh, samba installed really easily!!

I think this maybe the way forward!!

Stupid question, I am supposed to be installing mediatomb, ftp, samba openssh as root right? then when its all setup I will have to login under my standard username to use ftp for security?

EDIT2: I also need to look into sabnzbd as well as aria2 for rapidshare :p

Yes install as root and then access as user. Edit the configs as root.

vsftpd is really eay to set up, it's nice and simple, and secure.

You probably will need to add the entry to /etc/fstab (not fdisk!) to pick up your data drive..

it's not difficult. There's about 1,000,000 guides out there how to edit a fstab file. but before you edit the file, just try to mount it manually

eg.
# mkdir /mnt/temp1
# mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/temp1
# ls -l /mnt/temp1

You may need to alter the permissions. Also, to find out what your drive is an easy way theat usually works is to look through dmesg like this

# dmesg | grep dev

and it'll list all devices found at startup

Is it a windows (NTFS) drive?

Well this is the thing, I can turn it to whatever, my preference would be NTFS as I can add it back into my workstation easily should my home server die or summit.

I appreciated that ntfs may result in problems, well I should sat EXT3 is more stable, but more difficult to retreat to windows.

Atm my HDD content is 450 GB + data stored on an old 300 GB external drive. I am at the typing point, I can safely retreat to windows but my worry is when my collection grows over the next 6 months I will not be able to retreat. Thats why I need something built proof on my home server that wont blow up when I sudo apt-get && update :)

Debian seems good so far, FTP works out of the box, medatomb seems to be working.

Just need to install sabnzbd and aria2 in virtualbox and I think if all goes well debian will be my O/S of choice.

Well my debian install in virtualbox is working a dream!! Going to slowly start to install it on my server tonight!

Good call on debian!! Much easier than ubuntu home server, arch linux and freenas!!

Oxy is using Debian? Well, I never! :p

hehe well I used ubuntu for a while, when i was new to linux, so I guess I have used it before.

I didn't realise that it was so simple.

My only problem is I can't seem to find one central point for guides. Maybe I have been to pampered with Arch linux Wiki but I found a lot of info on peoples blogs and stuff all over the web.

I may even try install it on my macbook, I'm that impressed with it.

I like arch but I get fed up with AUR and using yought (never can remember how to spell it, dam french word :p) debian has more google hits as well, also the beauty I found when install sabnzbd, you can use the ubuntu init script!!! It works so well!!! :)

Debian is great for home s3erver use, over the next month I'll right my guide up properly and maybe get it stickied here. You all may think its so simple it wont even need a guide lol, but for people like me it would be handy.

it takes all the legwork out of setting up servers permissions updates etc
Setup an account with Amahi Free
download Fedora 9 or 10
follow the instructions on the website of where to put your account details
and where to add the repositories takes 2 seconds to type in box
let installation continue
job done
as I said its a noob friendly Linux alternative to WHS
it lets you do backups
let you set up users accounts
did I mention its easy

sure if your more into setting up servers and stuff you may do it yourself this is aimed at those who cant.

no its not a spam portal they did a demo at computex 2009 with Intel
http://blog.amahi.org/2009/05/20/amahi-to-demo-at-computex-with-intel/
Ive got no connection with this , I found it last year when it was in beta stage and have used it ever since

Hmm, ClarkConnect may be an even more viable alternative though. Based on CentOS and designed to be very user friendly.

tried that too, didn't get on with it.

As soon as you wanna break off the beaten track with ones like Clarkconnect, Amahi or freenas it becomes difficult. Installing sabnzbd aria2 etc became a real pain for me.

Debian just makes it easy.
